Well, C actually. His other cheek is also pretty tore up, forehead and split lip. And when he isn't looking like a road rash victim, he is the cutest thing!

At the very least, wipe the poop off your feet before getting in the car.

Talk about gardening & giant bean plants.....you know spring is coming.

We always plant a garden and it seems to get bigger each year. No need to plant a garden for my chickens because they always help themselves to whatever is in ours.

We have a lrg. field of alfalfa planted to draw the deer in and the chickens always favor that once the novelty of the fresh greens in the garden wears off.

I was thinking of hanging and drying some this fall to put in their run....don't know if they'd like the dry stuff. I gave them soaked alfalfa cubes (ones for horses) early this fall and they turned their little beaks up at it....wouldn't touch it!! Guess if it's not fresh they don't want it.

Spinach is an idea to plant......mine love it.

Ok, it has been 28 hours since I have been able to get on the check out BYC and you all gave me something like 10 pages and 99 unread posts.  I am never going to be able to keep up with this...

Chicken Grandma - thanks for the advice...Like I said my top three choices would probably be EE, Leghorns, and Deleware.  I have never been to TSC Chick Days...do they have different breeds or do you just pick out whatever they have?  Do they have them sorted into pullets, straight run, etc?

Raz - I am going to show my chicken ignorance here.  You're going to have to slow down w/ those abbreviations.  What is BLA and Uggo?  What is an egg song?  Never heard of Langshan.  Are they are brown or white layer?

NovaAman - I am not opposed to starting with larger pullets, but we have 3 kiddos, 5,5, and 18 months...they are expecting chicks...

Bianca - AWESOME PICTURE!!!

Teeville5 & Chickmate - Thanks for the warm welcome :)

Fuzzybuttlove - I guess it is just about finding a balance in your feeder.  It will probably be a little trial and error for me to find out what works best.  I plan on putting the feeder and water under the poop board under the roosts...haven not exactly figured out how it is all going to work yet.  Looking forward to hopefully starting to work on the coop tomorrow if the weather is nice.

Hillbilly Hen - We tried a garden last year too.  I think our seeds germinated and then rotted.  We just had so much rain last year.  Hopefully we will have better luck this year.  I think we are going to try some raised beds.  Hopefully that will help w/ the drainage issues as well.  Where in GA are you from?  We moved up here from the Atlanta suburbs a year ago.

Snowflake - I remember you saying something to me, but I am drawing a blank...something about Leghorns being great layers...hoping to get some of them!

Ok, well I have probably forgotten to acknowledge somebody that told me something.  You all are so kind and patient w/ me.  Hope you have all had a nice weekend.  My weekend is just starting :) - 4 days off yippee!

I just googled him... neat! and to think he made something as famous as the russet potatoe, and all on an elementary education! I myself am just looking to make some garden plants that are also easy on the eyes, and that make the most of our short growing season. Also on my agenda are watermelon and acorn squash.  I had some really nice things going last summer, but i lost the squash in due to severe squash bug infestation. One day i had big plants, a couple later nothing but dead stems. :(  For the melon i am trying to decide whether i like pink insides better, or orange. I have seen a few varieties that say they mature in around 80 days?

1Mutt- that chick face down in his food made me chuckle.  I am still happily resistant to your charms though by still being unhappily under the weather (darn thing became a sinus infection)

Nova- my oldest DD gave up sledding after many misadventures going down the hills.  First time, she broke her arm.  Second time, she went down on her belly, hit a bump and flew off and smacked her head on some snow covered ice.  Third time, well that darn tree decided to jump in her path.  Needless to say, she tends to be a bit accident prone.

We had a small garden last year.  Ours peppers, zucchini, cucumbers and squash did fantastic.  Our tomatoes, however, while bountiful never turned red.  We had lots of nice sized green tomatoes that we couldn't do anything with because they turned bad while we waited for them to get ripe.

Orange inside? Never heard of one or seen one unless you're talking about musk-melon. We plant both  but the kids favor the watermelon....seedless!

Our tomatoes didn't do so well last year either. We had tons & tons of them, canned lots but also had a lot of bad ones. Everyone around us, produce farmers included were all fighting some type of blight. Supposedly had to do a lack of calcium in the soil.
