cant get the light any higher if the lid is closed(need to be for safety),,,will pick up smaller watt today after work and do some trials, like the idea of the dimmer switch, not sure I can install??

Thanks for all the suggestions every one, I am getting Freedom Rangers, so I think I may need more heat then I did for the CX

I missed original post.  My question is do you need the lid on or is it just to keep the chicks in. The last few times I have ended up clothes pinning netting over the lid.  I liked it open so I could check easy and didn't want any escape artists.

Morning all. 

I have chicken wire over top the of my openings on the brooder to keep the chicks in....but mine are older.  

You have houses across the street?!!  Oh wait a minute, technically I do too, but they're at the end of the driveway and that's a quarter mile long. So the forest I'm seeing out my front window is across my driveway, not the street. Feels like a street though.

I've been providing peas for a week or so, perhaps not a good idea for these little mallards as I want them to be wild when they grow up. I've been feeding them chick "grumble" and about 20% game bird feed mixed in. When I started them with the peas, I added a bowl of chick grit in case they needed it. I did the same for the other chicks as well. The ducks cleaned out the grit bowl while the chicks barely touched it. I guess Nature tells them what they need.

 

Just got back from Meijer's, had a raincheck for swiss cheese and saved $3 a pound!  Anyway, before the real work starts I decided to sit down and do some light reading (ha ha) in here.  Yep, ducks are getting grit starting today.  I'm surprised your chickens don't like grapes.  Mine can't get enough, of course they like just abount any veg/fruit/bug offered.

They don't seem to like several things, pumpkin, cabbage,and pellet food. There were a couple of other things that I can't remember right now. Spoiled birds.

Chickens may ignore a particular type or kind of food but I guarantee that they will eat it when they get hungry.  I feed pelletized feed because they are not as prone to billing it out, so there is substantially less waste.  Mine ignored it for two days but they made the transition.  Chickens aren't finicky eaters.  They only become so if we let them.

I hate to be that shallow. On the other hand, it is easier for a smart person to be pretend to ignorant than for the ignorant to pretend to be smart.  I'll take the high road...For now.

I really want one of these because whose garden couldn't be made totally awesome by inserting a 5 ft chicken into it!
