tongue2.gif  I might be able to talk the husband in to doing some grilling..I have no idea whats out there in the freezer. Thinking of food at five thirty in the morning doesnt work very well for me..I will ponder it later. We may have some brats in this freezer...

My boss called me yesterday. She is gettting three rhode island red hens from her husbands best friend. His wife left him, and they were her birds. Coming from Ohio. I told her I will take them.

I am not taking them. I will give them to my brother in law. He told me to hatch him out only pullets. I do believe my rooster curse is his fault.

I just came in from the coop= ran out there barefoot because my hens were throwing such a fit in the coop I thought for sure something had gotten in there.

No.

Yesterday when I was gathering up the chicks who I said I had booted out to bring them back in (i am a big sucker), I accidentally pushed up the roost in front of the nest box on the wall. Perfectly good SECOND nest box in there, but this hen wanted THAT one. She couldnt get in because the roost was up, blocking the entrance.

She was throwing a fit, and the others must have been yelling at her to SHUT UP....

This was from someone (BYC name okiechickens) who has several different breeds/varieties, and you could mix and match for the dozen. So I asked her for a mix of her Blue/Black Ameraucana and her Easter Egger eggs. She said she would choose out the widest vaiety of shades of blue and green eggs that are laid this weekend to ship to me. I don't think Edna can cover more than four eggs (she's tiny), so when I get them I will candle to check if air cells are detached and keep the best ones. If more than four look good, I'll choose the best egg colors to keep, I guess.
If I get very lucky and most of the eggs look good--anyone interested in the extra eggs for your incubator or a broody hen? No charge, I'll just throw them out if I can't find anyone who wants them. No special claims about them being show quality (the Ameraucanas, obviously, since with the EE's that's not even a question...) or exceptional in any way. I was just interested in getting a wider range of egg colors. Anyway, I would be willing to meet someone part way if anyone is crazy enough to want to incubate any extras.
(Since we have been so disease-aware lately, I did ask her about her testing/vaccinating. She has not tested or vaccinated her birds, got the original stock from a NPIP source, has had buyers test her stock without a problem, but is not NPIP herself. Says she has a closed flock with no known problems. So I will cross my fingers just a little...) (Although most states do not require MG testing anyway, so a NPIP certification wouldn't matter there, and MG is the biggie as far as hatching eggs, right?)

I am ready to try my second attempt at hatching in my homemade incubator.... Just need some eggs to try.  Want to send them to me?  Would they have a chance?  I don't have any chickens yet, so if they work, they will be my first.

Good morning and happy Easter

Had another chick hatch overnight, a maran. A little Easter surprise. That may be it.

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

lau.gif  Funny stuff.  Good thing you can't poke sharp sticks in each other eyes' through the computer screen!

Well I am finally on my way back to Michigan after my stay in Sin City.  Of course the forecast is for rain.  That is usually what I have to look forward to when I come home from work.  At least I will arrive at a decent hour today to get in on Easter Dinner.  Have only been home for two days in about the last 10 so I am looking forward to eating some real "hypocritical" food.  As opposed to restaurant mystery meat.  One of these days I hope to have some of my own home grown food, but the inlaws only shop at Kroger.  I think ham is on the menu.  mmmm my favorite!  Hope everybody is enjoying the day!
