Michigan - Page 4027  

All this talk of wild boars reminds me of a local rancher who does those canned boar hunts on his land. He was outraged that he'd have to cull his boars because he wasn't one of those irresponsible boar ranchers that had escapees. Maybe not, but all it takes is a pregnant sow eventually escaping and OH LOOK! we have a feral boar problem here in the UP. Do you know how disastrous that would be? And it would be nearly impossible to track down and irradiate them once they escaped due to the highly rural nature of the UP. Exceptions can't be made.

Here is one of the news stories. Pretty much covers only his side on the issue with only a tiny blurb about the problem this invasive species can and will eventually cause.

I never have been able to get my head around the idea of a vegan lifestyle.  I have a nephew who advocates no meat no dairy and claims we'd all be much healthier if we'd become exclusively plant chewers.  Maybe if I'd never experienced real food it might be possible.  The taste of a thick steak just off the grill, the aroma of bacon frying, chicken and ribs just out of the smoker are just a few of the things that would make changing my diet impossible.  Since God didn't give me teeth like a cow I guess I was meant to be an omnivore.

I just wanted to say that in Hawaii the pigs are not native. They were brought over and some escaped the farms and so some run wild now. It wouldn't be so bad but did you see the pictures of what the pigs Daron bought were doing to Daron's fenced pasture? That is what they do - they rip the ground up bad. In Hawaii it creates a problem because they ruin native plants and the native plants feed the native geese and birds. Then in the troughs the pigs dig in Hawaii mosquitoes flourish and the mosquitoes cause disease for all the beautiful wild birds. 

So in Hawaii, it is an issue of an invasive species that someone brought to the islands and it is damaging the islands.  They keep the population low so the damage to the island is not so bad.

I never ran into one while hiking but the advice was to go up a tree because they are aggressive to people.  

I don't know about Michigan but I doubt if these pigs at the hunting ranch were native to Michigan.  It's people bringing animals into an area where they don't normally live that creates the problem - people again - creating problems by moving animals to where they will harm the native plants and animals. Hope this helps you feel more peace about it.
 

The feral hogs problem in Michigan hasn't reached the proportions that it has in some states like Florida, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Texas, but it could.  Hunting can help with, but not solve the problem.   So regulation is needed, but the DNR policy as written is flawed.  While the only one that the DNR has taken action against to date were game farm operators the law will impact small farm operations.  If I had the land necessary I would be raising Mangalista, Ossabow, and Mulefoot hogs.  They are considered heritage breeds yet can not be brought to Michigan.  The law should address how the hogs are raised not how long their hair is or what color they are.

I eat real food, too, you know, Opa!! If you go by the Bible, though, you know it was quite a long time before God said it was acceptable to eat meat.

If any pigs want to try and invade my forest they'll be rosemary stuffed pork loins and thick sliced bacon

RaZ, I have hundreds of these in my yard of dandelions and violets... what are they? I have never seen so many at one time.

This makes me almost wish I had pigs in my neighborhood!
