Teevile, I am so sorry to hear about your rooster. He sounded like a fantastic protector.

I hope you all have a great day. Our weather turned from sunny 75s to rainy 50s and I get to run around chasing my friends through the woods for the weekend. I shudder to think of how many posts to read when I get back late tonight :)

4 ISA Brown chicks, 4 Easter Egger chicks, 1 Peking duckling, 1 Indian Runner duckling, 1 Buff orp chick, 1 RIR chick, 1 SLW chick, 2 kids under 6, one overworked husband.

Well you really just about summed everything up there, good job! And you make me laugh, so thanks. :) This little comment is so hilarious...I cant believe that little brat thought it was ok to say crap like that! lol...I probably would have been a lot less polite than you, so good job.

There will probably be at least 200!! We certainly have been gabby lately. I find the only way I can keep up is to check in at least 2-3 times a day.

So now that I have this new job looming, I am finding it even harder than it was before to motivate myself to come to this craphole. I have to work 8-12 today and I cant even stand it. I have 8 hours of sick time to use before then, maybe I'll leave at 11...hehe. I can take my vacation time as pay though so that's sweet! I've only used 9 hrs out of 80 so there's almost a full paycheck right there. The only thing that will suck is, no vacation time this summer. But it'll be better pay and it'll be what I want to do. So yippee! Ok I'll stop babbling now and try to actually work...maybe.

Soory about that Roo Teeville.  I have 2 year old BR roos that need a good home.  They are big boys but time to make room for a dozen new layers.  All this dog fever!  When I got my Blue Heeler (ACD) I named her Jiilaroo.  When I was in Australia I went to a few cattle ranches and the cowgirls there were called Jillaroo's so after watching Jilly run around I figured she cowgirled up about as well as any I'd seen and it stuck.

All this dog stuff makes me miss my fav though - Jasmine (wherever you are I hope it's chasing rabbits).

Good morning All,

Wanted to do a multi post but it was acting goofy....posting double??? What the heck. Anyway I didn't make it to TSC last night so I'm gonna try to get there today. I have to get my supplies I need and check out if they still have those tin rooster sculptures....If they do, I'm bringing one home!

Opa you come up with some of cutest clips....Although I wouldn't want to have a porcupine as a pet...lol!!

Teeville....so sorry to hear about Goomer....hugs.gif

Taprock....what an awesome sight to see in the morning!  My relatives that live up near you use to have lots of deer around their property. Over the recent years they haven't seen nearly as many....figure the coyotes got them. Always a great sight to see in the morning while you're sipping your morning coffee.

Sorry about your rooster, Teeville.

My grandkids named my dog Milo.  They watched Milo and Otis in my car all the time when I use to have them all day.  Milo is the cat, but that's ok.  It fits him.

Have to go back in to Lansing to babysit my 1 yr old grand daughter.  It's going to be all day.  It'll be an experience because she uses sign language to communicate.  Been doing it for quite some time.  It's adorable to watch her sign, but ...  I don't understand her!  lol

Hope all of you will find something to keep you busy today so you don't chat so much while I'll be gone all day.

Have a good one!

Good Morning! We are all lazing around until it's time for soccer. Three boys(8,10,11) = 3 games.

I think DH is finally bitten by the chicken bug. He's been humoring me for the last month really about chickens but after handcrafting the coop door last night he all in. Who knew it just took having him get out the Kreg jig and sander. lol.png

Teeville - I'm so sorry about your roo. That's my worst fear(as I'm sure is everyone's) that I'm going to lose some girls. My dad lives right next door, in a country way, and he started with 12 last year Nd only has 7 now. He totally free ranges them on a gazillion acres. We have the usual suspects of raccoons, opossum, coyotes and hawks. Also a little concerned about my Dutch Shephard too. He's pretty prey driven. The bulldog...he chases leaves and butterflie and only if they stand pretty still. He's got no chance in hell of catching a chicken. roll.png

old rocker.gifMost days I don't think about age.  However, yesterday when Juise posted that she was 27 I realized that I have boots older than that.  How have the years gone by so quickly.

When having problems with chickens stop and think, what would Harlan do?

I'm still stuck on the all the candling talk.....is there a way to tell without cracking an egg open if it is firtil or not. When we have eggs for breakfast I check them for the bullseye but they seem to be hit and miss. My rooster is getting older and maybe not as zealous as he once was. He has 4 hens all to himself.
One more question for you or anybody else that wants to chime in: I have 2 FBCM pullets that I'm guessing are around 5-6 months old. They are now clucking like hens and.not chirping like babies, and let's just say the rooster has been giving them some extra attention...but no eggs yet. Shouldn't they be laying by now?

And yet another question (on the same subject).

I couldn't resist last night and candled just a few of the eggs.  I even saw some faint spider veining, but all definitely had changed...celebrate.gif Maybe this time I will actually get something.

So looked at the incubation and candling page this morning to compare the pics there with what I saw, and viewed a few more pages.  Someone mentioned candling the eggs with the big end down??  I had candled the small end down.  Any thoughts???

And Elliemae, I have read about the float test to determine fertility.  Maybe someone here can give you more info than me, or you could do a search for it on this site.
