he has a dog igloo in the garage with a pig blanket in there....and some hay. Theres a tortoise door cut out of the bottom of the walk-thru door and he comes and goes as he pleases.
Ms. Sue-
The panels have been here for a long time now. My husband is notorious for projects to sit here and not do them. Time to get er done!!!

Chickenstock is about 8 weeks away and there are only 11 people signed up on the pot luck thread.
Please look at the first post to see who is bringing what and then add your very own culinary delight in a reply post. I'll then add you to the list on the first post.
It seems like a long time, but 8 weeks in spring can zoom by before you know it.
Im bringing the coolers of soft drinks and waters, like I always do. :)
I am Taylor- the southeast side of the mitten.

Opa,
You make a very good point here. A chicken that can fly has a way to defend itself, even if it is a smaller bird. A Silkie and a Cochin bantam has a smaller wing. I don't know how well they could defend themselves by flying.
I have looked at both those chickens but never owned one.
Again, I think your Vorwerk breed would have an advantage over some of the other bantams in that it is hardy and has a way to escape predators. Are the Vorwerk bantams calm for kids to handle?
The D'uccle has been the easiest chicken for my children to handle but it did need the most protection from predators.
My silkies only pretend they can fly..they cant really get off the ground far. The little serama mix banties can soar! lol

What a crappy day....... had a flat tire on my way home from my haircut. Called my Dad to help me out. When he gets there he proceeds to tell me his PSA is high and he has to see a Urologist (3 of his brothers have had prostate cancer) AND that he had a chest x-ray and it revealed a spot on his lung which was not there when he had gallbladder surgery less than a year ago. Please send good thoughts and a prayer or two our way.
Prayers sent- I hope that they caught everything fast so they can get rid of it!
Keep us posted on how that goes!!

Sheltered area for him to go into at night or in the rain- he likes to wander around during the day, after the sun has come up and he eats grass and walks a few steps...eats another mouthful...takes some more steps. If he sees a dandelion he will wander over and eat that..seems grazing is his whole life. He will wander all day- so he needs some type of boundary fence. My coworker watched him for a week last year when I went on vacation on a fenced acre. She was so worried about losing him that she fenced off another smaller area to keep him in that was still larger than my backyard.
Her kids enjoyed him. I gave her a box of cactus pads for them to feed him as treats, and her four year old thought he was feeding a dinosaur.

Yes, I got 2 other chicks from the same lady, and they are thriving just fine... Just not this little guy. In fact, now that I think on it, the head on this guy is shaped the same as the splash, so, I do not think that is the problem... He does eat and drink, he is pooping... and he will go forward, but goes backward more... I know that not all chicks will survive... BUT if there is something I can do, I will try it.
I put my little Showgirl chick down today.
It was the same size as the Uggo hatchlings..(SillyChicken, there are SIX), and it was two weeks old. Its leg jutted out to one side, and it peeped constantly.
I mentioned it before, and I knew it was not going to be savable, I just had procrastinated it.
It stinks when you have to do this.

I know! Jace was so excited about the blue too. Ok, me too. BUT, dagnabit all. Oh, the crap shoot of chicken owning.
Should I just snip or tug?
Leila is keeping it warm... BUT, I can maybe give it a vit drop and them put it back? I do have a heat lamp, so I can do that too. I'd have to get a tub though. The brooder box I built, I'd have to put wood sides on it, since this little thing is so small it could fit thru the chicken wire!
Could you just put a heat lamp on Leila and the chicks? Vitamin drop, water, slushy food and water mix with eye dropper?
My favorite D'uccle got cold when she was a chick. I warmed her up and fed her some warm water mixed with her medicated chick starter and she came around.
She was the best chicken I ever had. So worth it if you can pull them through.
I have a 75 watt red light in there now... I could put the 250... but I think that might be to much for Leila. I might have a 100 watt bulb somewhere...
