My backyard is the east side of the house- the area gets mid day sun. The other houses/fence/garage prevents the early morning sun from hitting it.  By late afternoon, it is shadowed by the tree, other houses.

We are bringing in idirt to raise the ground up some- its very low and floods regularly. I need ground cover that will grow- besides this awful weed that I cannot use enough elbow grease to get rid of. That grows fine- and soon chokes out everything else.

Yeah... cold.

It was 32 here... SO, the night wasn't too bad. I did see frost on some cars, but not much. YEAH! A lot of people did heed the advice of the forecasters and covered plants. I brought mine in.

Well, no work today. WOOHOO. However, I do have to figure out what is wrong with that stupid lawn mower that keeps shutting off... I think there may be something wrong with the throttle...? There is gas in it, but it keeps stalling like its out of gas. SO, gonna degunk, grease up, change plug and hope I can get the back yard mowed before the wildlife thinks I am growing a jungle and move in, and eat my dogs. LOL. If I get around to it, I might work on the silkie tractor... Key word being MIGHT. LOL

Mom, maybe he does like watching the chickens. I have people who stop in front of my house, or stand across the street and just stare at my house... not MY HOUSE, but my yard. LOL. There is a lot of color going on here. A bunch of variety in kinds of hens. I'd still be wary though.

Glad you got your butt covers back Jen. To bad you weren't able to get a photo of the kids running around with those same butt covers on their heads. LOL. BUT, hey, you got labor, and all it cost you was a few days of missing diapers and the stress of maybe replacing them.

At the very least, wipe the poop off your feet before getting in the car.

I'd like some ideas on this, too.  Not sure about Mom2Ems situation but I live in a swamp.  Literally.  I mean I have a lawn and some higher-ish ground.  but basically swamp.  Here's what I'd like though I don't know if anything is possible:

1)  I'd like a fast growing shade tree.  It won't be constantly in standing water but the ground would be pretty spongy where I want to put it.

2)  Anything that I can put between the lawn and the swamp that will help in my never-ending fight against the cattails.  I like the cattails, I just wish they wouldn't encroach.  Not sure if there's any plant on earth that could win that battle and not end up being more of a problem though.

3)  It seems like most wet plants aren't edible - no fruit trees/bushes like spongy soil, even plants aren't that keen on it (except I guess celery...).  It would be nice if I could plant some bushes or trees that I could eat the fruits of.

I pretty much get massive amounts of sunlight.  The ground is just wet.  Always.

Mom,
That would make me nervous!

I hope those lower level chicks don't corrupt my innocent angels!   Yes picts please!!

Since I have had kindness and generosity shown to me, I'll going to pass some of it forward.   I'm giving away all the bantum chicks,  d'uucle chicks 3 porcelain and 1 awful cute brown one, you should see the feet feathers on this guy!   2 sebright and one mystery chick.  I know someone on here previously mentioned being interested in the porcelain chicks, so let me know if you're interested.  I'll post some picts of the others tonight.   PM me!

Above chick is the cute brown one.  Very cute color pattern, his feet feathers are all black except the very outer edges.  His body feathers are all brown so far, except his wing feathers are black on one side.  Very cute and curious chick - was going to keep it (think it may be a roo, but not sure yet).

Morning all, cold here at 24 still. It is supposed to get to 50 today and not be windy so I might get some work done on my coop.  I get to stay home most of the day.  There is a square dance tonight that we are planning on. I have to make up some goodies to take.

P.S. I hope you don't take it down before I get to try it on my kids tomorrow, gimme until 1 or 2, will ya? big_smile.png

I have actually made some minor changes to this copy but it was the easiest to find.  In general I'm looking for ideas of what kind of questions I'm going to have to field from kids, both about chickens and being afraid. How to keep it on track I guess.  In the letter I am sending out to prospective schools/etc.  I am pretty clear that if I get a question on "Where do the eggs come from?" or "Where do the chicken nuggets come from?"  The kids will get a truthful answer in the gentlest way possible. The thing is you NEVER can imagine some things kids ask!

Trying to count my 60+ chickens.  Polish, Ameraucana, Welsummer, Cornish, Production Red, Cochin, Cuckcoo Maran, Black Austrolorp, Sizzle, Showgirl, Silkie, OEG, Partridge Rock, Russian Orloff, Dorking, Basque.  Tough...

The peeps have arrived!  That phone call at 6:05 this morning could only be one thing.  Post office!  I jumped out of bed and drove to the post office post haste!  All of the chicks seem healthy and happy except for one.  She is smaller than the others and just sorta stands there and seems uneasy on her feet.  Her head and wings are both a little droopy.  I did see her peck at a little bit of food though, so hopefully she will come around.  Hope to get some pictures a little later!

Jendear-so glad you found the diapers.  DW and I were talking about it, and just couldn't believe people would do that.  Hopefully this will all work out for the greater good!

would digging a small pond help?

Most water loving trees cannot be planted it within 50' of anything because the roots spread wide and shallow.
