Friday = Payday = Where in the heck did all that money just go?  th.gif  DH is just working a 1/2 day so I think I'll torture him by putting all the siding on the coop and attaching the run(aka massive dog kennel) to the coop.

So I'm thinking with all these little bantams I'm hypothetically going to have I may need to build a small coop for them too...I'll call it the Banty Shanty...gig.gif

AND DANG it's cold out!  The coop said 35 this morning.  My chickens are probably in shock. ep.gif

Ladyfeather et al., here is a shot of the ladies in our tractor.  Don't ask for blueprints; they don't exist.  I just followed the voices in my head and some pictures of other BYC tractors.  We also have a smal portable fence that we attach to give them some more room.  There is too much going on in the neighborhood to have them free-range.

Thanks to all for the welcoming messages.  This seems like a very friendly community.

I just can't believe that they had these on their faces. Two of the boys will be mowing my lawn and building my chicken coop with us. Their dad was ****** to say the least, and volunteered them to come over everyday after school for the next month. And on the plus side my chickens are getting their 'grown up' feathers!

Seriously?  On their heads?  Oh my...sickbyc.gif    I'm SO glad you got them back AND even just as important their parents are holding them accountable.

VJ -  I would simply take a damp cloth and wipe your dear Waffles down.  It is not natural or desirable for a chicken to be soaked to the skin. Especially a young chicken like Waffles in this early Spring weather. Also, by using baby shampoo you will remove her natural waterproofing oil.  I assume that RIRJen is keeping her chickens in the house for a long time following their baths and she has a reason to bathe them (the show).   As a rule

I would NOT soak a chicken with water and adding soap to strip the oils from her feathers is not a good idea.  Just damp wipe a light colored chicken if you must and make sure it is 110% dry before you put it in a chilly location. Provide good dust bathing areas for her. She can preen and groom herself and will be healthier also.

Thanks for the tips.  Waffles is still in the nice toasty house because of her babysitting duties to the youngens. I may never get these d'uccles out of the house if the kids have anything to do with it!  But I'll try just wiping her off.  Her feet may need a real bath though.

You sayin' I can't have pretty chickens?  tongue2.gif

For those of you with adult d'uccles....how big do they get?  Did you see the picture I posted of her and our Isa Brown?  She is SO small.  Can you post a comparison pics of a full grown d'uccle and another breed to compare?

wee.gifYAY!!!  Hopefully that little one perks up now that it will be warm.

Oooh pear!  YAY I love pears!  And I don't think a pond would help - I have 2 already.  And marsh channels that link them and surround my house like a moat.  I figure I'm good to go for the zombie apocalypse though.

yeah, I saw that and put it in bold since you mentioned it'd be nice to get food too!  I'd research the pear though, because, many of the trees now a days are grafted on different root stock.  So you'll want to make sure the root stock can handle moist conditions.

we have an old pear tree, it's got to be 20' tall.. but it's pretty old.  It is growing on the hill next to our pond.  I know it's an old school pear tree.   I've often wanted to clear the brush away from it to see if I can get a few pear off it and start some seedlings.

It was 32 here... SO, the night wasn't too bad. I did see frost on some cars, but not much. YEAH! A lot of people did heed the advice of the forecasters and covered plants. I brought mine in.

Well, no work today. WOOHOO. However, I do have to figure out what is wrong with that stupid lawn mower that keeps shutting off... I think there may be something wrong with the throttle...? There is gas in it, but it keeps stalling like its out of gas. SO, gonna degunk, grease up, change plug and hope I can get the back yard mowed before the wildlife thinks I am growing a jungle and move in, and eat my dogs. LOL. If I get around to it, I might work on the silkie tractor... Key word being MIGHT. LOL

Mom, maybe he does like watching the chickens. I have people who stop in front of my house, or stand across the street and just stare at my house... not MY HOUSE, but my yard. LOL. There is a lot of color going on here. A bunch of variety in kinds of hens. I'd still be wary though.

Glad you got your butt covers back Jen. To bad you weren't able to get a photo of the kids running around with those same butt covers on their heads. LOL. BUT, hey, you got labor, and all it cost you was a few days of missing diapers and the stress of maybe replacing them.

Check to see if you have an inline gas filter.  You may need to change that as well.  also, it may need a new spark plug!

Oh good point, I hadn't even thought about that.  If I went to an actual nursery (not like a big box store) they would probably know, right?

And lucky you with the old pear tree!

They should be able to at least find out for you vs a bbs.

I was looking at the overall composition of my flock and contemplating the changes I want to make in it.  I think that I want to increase the number of bantam blue orpingtons and the Vorwerks I have.  So I am going to need to get rid of a few others.  I have a trio of bantam Spangled Hamburgs that would be free to anyone who wants to come and get them.

They are beautiful healthy birds but since I don't handle my birds as pets don't expect them to sit on your lap or be a playmate for your kids

OPA - Do you think they'd be street smart as free rangers?  Are the ladies still laying eggs occasionally?  My oldest daughter loves pickled eggs and your case for bantam eggs, rather than large is quite persuasive.  Our chickens aren't penned in a run though.  Once homed they'd be free-ranged with the rest of the flock.
