Box style live traps are quite often turned over and even dragged some distance by raccoons in their attempt to access the bait.  The trap needs to be secured or heavily weighted to prevent this common occurrence.  That is why I have quit using them and switched to the Duke dog proof trap.  It is a leg hold trap and since it relies on the animals ability to grasp to trigger it you won't have to worry about catching your dog or the neighbors cat.

Father's day dinner for my Dad tomorrow will include apple cherry pie and fresh duck! Will get the apples n cherries prepped and cook the pie tonight, and the duck is already in the fridge.

He is not the kind of guy that wants gifts. So I go the route of making good food, seems to work! I am sure when he gets here tonight from lower Michigan, he'll be grabbing a piece of pie early, hah.

And DH decided to head to F&T anyway and pick up 3 of those Duke traps and told me to bring 'em on down to CS in case anyone wants to buy one. He said they'd be about $15 each including the sales tax. If no one wants one, he said he'll just be trapping the coons faster this year. tongue2.gif

Not necessarily, DH picked two off with his 45 last summer. Those Duke traps sound like a good idea though....do they sell them at TSC?

Unfortunately no.  You'll have to order them on line or come to Chicknstock and hook up with Swampducks

Getting back to the Dog Proof Coon Traps by Duke, DH recommends getting the http://www.fntpost.com/Products/Dog+Proof+Trap+Setter trap setting tool to set these suckers. Otherwise you need to be pretty strong. He's going to show me how to set it, too so I can demonstrate.

He hasn't bought any extras of these u-shaped setters since ya only need one (and he has one for himself already) But he found out they're open again on Friday and it's easy for him to pop on by when he goes to camp to check his traps. So, if anyone knows ahead of time they want a trap and a setter, let me know. The setters are $2.95 plus tax.

I'd like one.

well it seems that I am not allowed to comment on my coop being insecure, and that killing the coon would just be a pleasure killing, and if I just had a secure coop to begin with it wouldn't have happened. It amazes me how in the nearly year of my being on but, and I say some ticked off response, with no swearing either, and I get in trouble, because I said it be a pleasure... Geez. So, I am now troll worthy. he.gif

I am going to go jump in my pool before I get belligerent as well.
At the very least, wipe the poop off your feet before getting in the car.

I could use a setter, might make setting easier for my old body.
