I've had a busy weekend so far.  We managed to get rain all night last night.  So nice, however how much I don't know.   DH put the rain gauge under the eaves so I know it isn't correct.

The last two nights I have taken my 9 four month olds out of the small coop and put them in with the adults.  They are all the same size and don't seem to get picked on but are very scared of them.  Then I took the 5 yes 5 broodies and tossed them in the small coop after removing all nest boxes.  It gives new meaning to the words Angry Birds. The broody Polish is the worst!  Hopefully they will be done soon.

Nova - sorry about your birds and glad Roger was a tough guy and saved some.  Ignore the guy giving you a hard time about wanting to kill the raccoon. The honest truth about predators is they will always take the easiest meal, if not from you, from the neighbor.  And the second truth is after they find the easy meal they will keep coming back for it.  I hope you get him.  Tan him and turn him into a chicken apron.

I know more has happened but I can't remember.  I have been keeping up reading the last couple days but have never had time to comment.  Have a great Father's day dad's.  I have to get my son up shortly because he is making breakfast for DH.

My two younger LF are the same way.  After 3 attempts I finally have them fully integrated, they go to bed with the big girls willingly and are finally roosting next to them.  But for some reason once they are out of the coop and "free ranging" they freak out every time the biggers come near.  IDK why because they don't pick on them.  They spend a lot of time near the bantam fence wanting back in with Waffles.  roll.png  I'm hoping if I just stay steadfast and make them range with the biggers that they will eventually get it.

When having problems with chickens stop and think, what would Harlan do?

fathers day 2.gifBeing a father hasn't always been easy but all of the effort has paid dividends.  David and Hope's sons wanted to take me out for dinner today, but I suggested that they all come here instead.  First it costs too much money.  Second, taking the new babies to a restaurant would be difficult.  Third, it is difficult to visit in a restaurant.  And finally, it's easier to bring Hope's stepdad here.

So yesterday Hope, Granny, and I did much of the prep work, made potato salad and cheese cake and placed a bunch of catfish filets in the refrigerator to start thawing.  This morning I'll make a big fruit salad and get everything else ready for this afternoon.  David's in-laws will be joining us and it is going to be a great day.

G'night everyone!

It's the Uggos. They are trying to control your mind. They want you to spread their genes everywhere, like those aliens in old horror movies. And in really bad alien/horror movies there are always escaped prisoners messing things up for the hero and heroine.

Well, we finally got rain and I know the west MI farmers must be as happy as I am!  Too bad about the coon problems.  I would be trapping them but my methods go back to my younger days as a fur trapper.  I still have a few hundred sets that are in storage.  The drawback is the possiblity of catching and killing pets.  There are good live traps on the market that don't injure animals so if you get a non-target it can be released.  One thing to remember, the victor/havahart box traps are sized for particular animals.  Make sure you are using one large enough for coons.  When I trapped we would get coons that weighed in excess of 40 pounds.  They were pretty darn big and a small live trap is not going to get them.

celebrate.gif< That's what all the farmers are doing now because we got rain too!! Or they might be doing this > barnie.gifbecause they had their irrigators set to run this morning and it rained shortly after the crops got watered!! big_smile.png i don't really like the farmers that I have around my house!! It's nice that their irrigation waters part of my front lawn, but it's really NOT nice that they decide to start to harvest their crops at 11pm!! And they work until 3 or 4 IN THE MORNING!! The field is directly across from my house, so their lovely BRIGHT lights on their tractors shine very nicely into our house! It lights up the house like its NOON!! Very hard to sleep over the noise and the lights shining right into our bedroom window. Bad thing is, we have really dark curtains too!

I had a coon problem and got a trap from my mom and I asked her if that coon would fit and she said yes. I seen that coon and it was HUGE!! I don't even see how the sucker would fit through the doorways to the coop! I would have laughed if it got stuck!! We eventually shot her and then we had no more "disappearing" eggs!! woot.gif
