Yup, that averaged me 3 eggs a week per hen. So, I don't think I was abusing their natural order to much... I had 11 hens, but only 7 that were laying...
At the very least, wipe the poop off your feet before getting in the car.

Busy day for me today.  I still have the injured girl in a cage.  I let her out for a while but I think she was limping more so she is back in.  Any ideas on what to do for a closed foot injury?  It seems rather warm to the touch and swollen but not discolored.

 

Nova - You did what you could for Mr. Fluffers, I'm sorry it wasn't enough.  Such a handsome guy.

 

My egg production is way down the last two days and I really do have some molting birds.  It is much earlier than last year, but then the ones that really need to molt haven't started.

We picked up more pheasant today.... DH is killing me with these birds!! Maybe I will release them a bit early, hmmm. We are up to 4 breeds now! I need a bigger barn!

Well, I got home today from camping in traverse city for a week with my family. My dad stayed home and took very good care of the birds and pets. Not a single bird died in his care.  I missed 50 pages of posts and I can't catch up on them all. Just realized that the clare bird/small animal swap is tomorrow. Hope to see some of you there. I was just very irritated when I originally read that... I have met an actual, for profit, meat/egg layer farmer. These people give a hoot for their investment, and it brought me to a new understanding. Their whole family does this poultry business, from turkeys, meat birds, to egg layers, and selling chicks. The same people who butcher for me. We got to see some of their birds and facilities. It was not something to be scoffed at and regarded as a bad thing. I think they have done very well by their birds/investment.

Penny has been safely transported to his new home.  He's very lucky to be living on a big, full farm, with a harem of 20 beautiful hens.  Onward.

 

I think we're going to get either one or two new birds before the snow flies.  We have a vacation later this month, so it wouldn't be until Sept.  If we get 2 chicks in early September, they'd be feathered out and big enough to move out to the coop by November, right?

 

I think we'd get 2 bantam chicks for space reasons.  Any chance anyone here might have bantam cochins and silkies eggs in the works?
