Y'all's prayers really worked overtime/Need a geeks help on game conso

Quote:
I'm not a closet geek, I've been out for 25 years since I was writing my own games
on my Commodore Vic 20 & 64.

Anyways, my favorite games are the flight simulators & flight combat type games.
Plus a few Star Trek games, just to round out my geekness.

I have an Xbox with 60 games. It sits on the shelf. The games are for kids. I know
there are a lot of adults that get into them but not me. I've refrained from a PS2
or XBox 360 because at $400 for the console & $50 a game it just doesn't make sense.
Even my kid barely plays it. He's a lot more interested in backyardchickens.com than
Xbox or PS2.

Anyways, the whole purpose of my reply is to help you. You can still find older versions
of games like Sturmovik that will run fine on his older laptop. I just ebayed it and found
a ton of older copies for less than $10. He will get 100 hours or more of game play
out of that $10. Plus there are several add-ons for it. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002
would also be a good choice.

I don't know your SO so I can be completely off here. If he is the type to play shoot em
up type arcade games then PS2 is fine. Heck for what Sturmovik costs you can get
him both.

Y'all have been really wonderful. Thanks for all the great advice and for going out of your way to find me links, etc.
ChicknGurl, you gave me an idea with your reply and now I've gone and shot myself in the foot so to speak. We knew that the game he has, called Jane's World War II fighters, would definitely not work with his XP Pro for whatever reason. We failed to ever try it on my desktop with XP Home. Boom! It started right up. We'll have to try and find an USB adapter for his joystick if he wants to continue to use my desktop, but that's no biggie.
That creates two new problems. If he's on MY puter playing his game, how am I suppose to get to the BYC forum and haunt it for hours??? Yeah, I can use his laptop, but I hate it and it's itsy bitsy keyboard.
The other thing is, now I don't have a single clue as to what to get him for Christmas and I've already bought those games!

I think I might go ahead and get him the PS2 anyhow. Besides dogfighting, he's a cop and an avid gun enthusiast, so maybe some shooting games.
Thanks again y'all. I'll definitely check out those links!
Blessings, Kat

Sorry!

Get another standard keyboard that attaches by USB for the laptop. That way you don't have to use the small keys.

I bet he'll still love the PS2. I've a friend (in his 50's) who plays the SOCOM Navy Seal games and auto racing simulators on PS2.

I'll probably get shot for this but buy him Grand Theft Auto Vice City. The GTA San Andreas is bigger with better graphics but is way more violent but still very fun. Get him that too but Vice City is very fun and can be found for $10 or $15 new. Great shooting fun and you can steal cars and drive like a mad mad. Great fun for ADD sufferers like me.

Nah, I don't shoot people, although there's been a few I've felt really deserved it.
You have adult ADD like me? Isn't it fun? Then middle age sinks in and you not only can't sit still for anything, you can't even remember why you wanted to in the first place!

As an added bonus, my darling doctor has me on three different meds that all have the side effect of 'vivid dreams', so I'm wired and could write a book on dreams!
Great suggestions. He'll definitely be getting the PS2 and whatever games I can afford. Now if I can just talk that shopkeeper into lowering the price on the samuri sword he wants

....some men have a mid-life crisis, mine just wants more toys.
Have a great day y'all!

Little boys never grow up...they just get more expensive toys as time goes by!

WIN98 is a 16 bit interface Operating System(OS) with 32 bit capabilities. JANE"S WWII FIGHTERS is a 16 bit software package.

WINXP PRO is a 32 bit interface OS that supports 64 bit interface OS and is not backward compatible to 16 bit programming.

If you wish to upgrade his laptop Ebay may be a place to start but Caveat Emptor,"Let the buyer be aware!" Try other resources..google "computer parts;resellers" or goto www.computergeeks.com or www.majorgeek.com ,two places where I buy yesterday's goodies and today's trash?

If you wanted to go and buy your SO a new computer...I may be able to help if y'all are willing...I'll donate to the cause a box and power supply(never been used),an ATI Radeon graphics card(factory refurb) with PCIEx16 interface,a Licensed copy of WINXP HOME or PRO. Memory is cheap and if you don't need to get the latest,greatest,cutting-edge techno-machine,buy an affordable mobo/cpu combo+160GB HDD. I'll take pictures on how to assemble and do a 'burn-in' test. Then y'all are good to go.

I'm doing this because at one point in my life, I was in similar circumstance, and had someone give me a hand up not just a hand out...so I'm paying it forward. And that's all I have to say on the subject.
All y'all take care!

carugoman,
I'll email you about that later, if that's okay. My body is screaming for a nap right about now. And you're right about the toys, I thought the harley and the big fancy tractor were going to be enough, but apparently there is no end to some little boy's dreams. Oh well, there are alot worse things he could be doing and besides, I secretly love being on the back of the bike.
Blessings, Kat
