Does anyone else ever go to this pond? There is always a big collection of mallards and mallard-crosses and Canada geese on the pond, attracted by the townspeople who feed them bread and scraps. (If I lived there, I would propose to the city council that they put in coin dispensers where people can at least buy waterfowl food if they HAVE to feed the birds, but I just visit from time to time.) Anyway, I was there last night and I saw a couple of purebred Pekins, and a Toulouse goose, which didn't surprise me given how common they are, and a beautiful Cayuga, which surprised me a lot! My 9-year-old son came up and said "there's a Cayuga!," and I was distracted and said "not here, maybe another mostly black duck," and he said "it looks JUST like OUR Cayugas," and I looked up and lo and behold it was definitely a Cayuga. It was in fine feather and obvious good health, and I wondered how it got there.
Next time I am going to bring my camera so I can pictures of some of the interesting crosses I saw, so we can play the guess the parentage game!
