What's the difference between raw rice that you buy in the store and rice that is found in some feed. If raw rice is not good for chickens, then why do they put grains of rice in some of the animal feed. Am I missing something? Isn't that the same thing? I'm confused.

I know some people that feed "rice from the feed store" to their chickens. Does anyone else feed their chickens rice that is bought at the feed store?

what? rice isn't good for chicken? i don;t know that.

my chicken eat grains only everyday, they eat cracked corn and rice grain.

oh, i don't know what's major food in US, in here rice is major food for almost all of citizen, i give them rice that exactly like i eat everyday.

I've always understood that rice should be cooked first, due it's capacity to increase in size in the gut (which is why, incidentally, they don't throw rice at weddings any longer).

Rice is perfectly fine for chickens and any other bird, cooked or uncooked. There is an urban legend that raw rice will swell up in the stomach of birds and kill them. This was started back in the 1950's as an April Fools day joke, and it took on a life of it's own when Ann Landers published it in her column. Kinda like the myth that there are pasta trees in Italy.

Mulia24 has a point. There wouldn't be a bird left alive in Indonesia if rice could kill.

yap, the garls and boys love the rice 100% than cracked corn.

even if i cooked the rice (like i eat everyday) and make it wet or make porridge (wet rice) trust me, you will not want to stand 1 more second after put the bowl of porridge/cooked rice in front of that chickens.

Mulia24,
Same here, the birds love rice. I give them a handful occasionally.
To answer your question about the major grain here in America. Probably wheat is #1, that is bread, but rice and potatoes are pretty big as well. I think most people eat a variety of foods.

mine eat rice both hulless and whole rice. i also feed them rice bran pellets towards the end of summer sothey add some fat to them for winter. its not going to swell that much if at all. remember if you give them grit they will grind it up. if grain really swoll up in their stomachs and hurt themn wed all be screwed have you ever seen what corn does when it gets wet. it swells about the same rate as rice.

thanks for info.

major food is rice here, it means no one that didn't eat rice in their daily eat. rice is first to served on table, then we just add chicken, potato, fish or other as "complement".

so, people in USA majorly eat bread everyday?

I have read a lot of posts that said rice wasn't good for chickens. This really concerned me when a relative gave me 100lbs of rice from a feed mill. I haven't fed it to my chickens yet because I was afraid that I would kill them if I fed them the rice.

A local feed store introduced me to some feed that had corn, pellets, sunflower seeds, rice and a few other grains and assured me that the rice would not harm them. When I saw the rice I got scared but I did throw a handful out to them and they went crazy for the grains.

So it's ok to feed rice is what I'm hearing.

Yes OK as a treat, probably not nutritionally great as the only food. I give about 1/2c raw rice 1x a week with their treats. 4 hens.

Some do. The USA is so multi cultural now, that just about anything goes. Don't know if you could say USA majority anymore.

Makes the phrase Popcorn chicken kinda scary.
