Well, I always thought that ducks could see at night. After we have let our ducks stay out of the pen for the last couple of nights I realized they can't see any better then I can and I don't see that well at night.

I was trying to coax them in to there new little house by our pond for them and Cocoa our female kept trying to bite all over my hand she couldn't see the pees in my hand. I turned on our decorative lights around our porch and then she could see them. She tried chashing a cocheroch (sp) and once it ran into the dark she lost it. I told my hubby that is probably were they got that expresion "like a sitting duck".

Neither one of my ducks can see well at night. Are all ducks like this?

I was just thinking last night as I handed out treats how well the ducks see at night. I wait until dark and the chickens have roosted to give the ducks their goodies or they get cheated by the faster chickens.

Mine don't seem to see well at night either. They're fine now because I keep a heat lamp out in their pen, but it they get outside, they stick tight and wait for me to come get them.

Thats interesting, everyone has a different observation.

The other night I went out to check on them and my dog ran past them and scared our female, she ran crazy and I swear hit every toy in the yard. All you hear is clunk, crash, and a duck quacking.

I started whistling at her and she started to walk back to me while quacking back. Like we were playing marco polo. Maybe it is a breed thing, only some breeds see well?

We have very long days up here in the summer. My ducks are active as long as there is still some light. They seem to put themselves to bed at dusk. When I still had them in the basement, if I left a night light on for them, I could hear them till the wee hours on and off. If I turned the light off, they settled immediately and I didn't hear a peep out of them till dawn. That's how I was able to get my silkies and my first little flock co-habitating in the same pen at night. I put the two of them the silkies) in with the others with a night light and then turned the light off. The fighting stopped right away.

I'm gonna test this tonight!
