Cynthia, he's a good looking boy. Wish I could have roosters.
I took my sick barred rock to the vet today. I really wanted to know what was wrong with her. Mostly I was worried she had contracted one of the horrible chicken diseases that meant I had to kill all my chickens or have a closed flock. (Yes, I'm prone to the worst case scenario.) Or at least treat the whole flock for something.
On the positive side, she does not appear to have coccidia. Since no one else in my flock is sick, he doesn't think it was one of the horrible chicken diseases either. But the bacteria in the test looked to be pretty normal, so there is no obvious culprit. He prescribed amoxicillin for her since it's cheap and worth a shot. He also said once chickens start getting older issues sometimes present themselves.
I felt so bad for her, she was closing her eyes in the vet's office. At least the amoxicillin is pina colada flavor, so it should taste good for her. I guess I'll know in a few days one way or the other.
