You guys are lucky to be going to the chicken show. Have fun!

Cynthia, glad your doggie was able to get checked out and get some meds to help him.

Ok, time for a small picture dump! First is a shot of my babies in the brooder. I have preteens! They grow so fast, and their personalities are starting to show more. Won't be too long now before I have to upgrade them to a larger living space.

Here's my EE baby, Serenity. I noticed the other day that she has white/pale gray coming in on her feathers. I'm sooo excited to see what kind of coloration she ends up with! I still can't tell if her legs are green or slate.

Also, I have a little concern in the back of my mind. Here's my Welsummer baby. do Welsummer's have large combs?

babies3.jpg

She's 3-4 weeks old. I don't see any pink on her face yet, but I noticed that her comb is larger than the others. I don't know what I'll do if she ends up being a boy. I got her from a bin that was supposed to be all pullets. She's such a good girl, though. I hope she IS a girl. I've seen her break up pecking squabbles with the others, and she is pretty calm when being set back in the brooder after being handled (where the others do the "Ruuun!" thing) Despite my bad picture, do you guys think she looks like a girl? In the first picture, she is the brown one in the middle.

So yeah, thanks for letting me share. This is the first year that I've been able to raise babies, and I am enjoying it so thoroughly. Between my four preteens and my two teenage girls, I feel so relaxed and happy to have them here with me.

Oh yes, and please pardon the mess big_smile.png I have the brooder set up in our garage, since I can keep it locked and control who or what comes through there.

I have 2 Welsummer chicks snd i don't think either of their combs are that big. I just read another post where someone said that makes tend to be more friendly as chicks and the females tend to scatter. I hope it's not true for your sake though!

Oh my gosh, you guys. I went out this morning to check on my babies, and there was a spot of blood on the floor of the brooder. It was a little smaller than a quarter and I got a picture of it, because I've seen shed intestinal lining and this was WAY darker and bloodier than lining in poo. I checked everyone's bums and I don't see any traces of blood, but I'm really worried now. If I lose another baby, I will just cry sad.png

Thanks Kimmy. Even if he/she turns out to be a boy, I think I'd be very tempted to keep her. She's been a pretty good little bird thus far.

Red, I hope that the blood is nothing to worry about. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

I'm also planning on going to the bird show. I've only been to the state fair, which is probably nowhere near the same caliber as this.  I'm planning to strongarm all four of my kids to going. There's varying levels of enthusiasm to this. LOL  I'll get there around 11 and stay for about 1.5 hours.  Corvidae, I'd love to say hi to you if we can, but I don't know how we'll recognize each other. I guess I'll be fairly noticeable with four kids, right?

Hi Guys, Got a question.  Birdie has this red spot on both sides of her head.  Nobody else has this who are the same breed (sex link) and same age.  Should we be concerned? She is active and happy acting otherwise I would be freaked! Help! ucm

That looks like her earlobe. I could be wrong, but it looks perfectly normal to me.

I didn't take any pictures at the chicken show. My kids were as unenthusiastic as predicted. I was a little disappointed- the bantams were definitely dominant, and I'm much more interested in large fowl. There were some AMAZING barred rocks there. And I was blown away by how gigantic some of those roosters were.

I did run into the owner of River Rock Family Farm, and while she wasn't showing anything, she did tell me that the show was much larger than in years' past, so it sounds like its' going in the right direction.
