Okay, now I'm a little worried about my GLW pullet. I didn't think too much of it until kimmy posed the question, but it does seem like my pullet has her feathers fluffed a lot, and Wyandottes are supposed to be cold hardy. I've been watching her today and her poo is watery with what looks like a lot of the shed lining in it. She's also drinking like a parched camel. I've put some electrolytes in their water, but I'm wondering if I should get her some vitamins? I checked that page that has all the poo pictures, and the closest I can match it to is the watery one where it says hens will drink a lot and make a lot of poo to try and cool off. The garage where they sleep at night is insulated, but it still gets cool on the floor where their carrier is. When they're outside, they almost always have water (sometimes they tip the dish over and we have to refill it) and I try not to put them in too much direct sunlight.

Hector, if that story is true, it's no wonder the hen died. Ouch!

Game warden of the crazy preserve. Inmates include: EE's, BSL, BO, SLW, Welsummer, Exchequer Leghorn, blue/black Wyandottes, BR's, Delaware, Barnevelder, barnyard mixes, Ameraucana's, Icelandics, three turkeys ..... and anymore, I feel like I'd fit right in there, as well!

Cynthia, those chicks are too cute. What exactly are they? I haven't read this forum in a while..

Got the necropsy result back from the vet diagnostic lab. Basically, they didn't find anything in the one chick as far as infectious disease goes, but they are saying I need to have more of the group checked and that one chick is not a good enough sample to be anything close to definitive. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, as the case may be), none of the others have died. The diagnostic lab as well as the poultry specialist seem to agree on the opinion that it was probably viral, but highly unlikely pullorum. They also say it is highy unlikely they caught anything they would be carriers of now.

It's kind of a relief, but I sure wish we could have found something more definitive. The poultry specialist said the best way to be absolutely sure is simply to cull all the chicks in that quarantined group. sad.png I'm just not sure I am up to that.

Donna that is great you were able to get it all checked into....glad it is not the scary bad thing at least.

Cynthia-why is it your chicks always look so stinking adorable? So you did not get much blue here for your guy.....the fifth pic down, all dark no light, is that one blue? or black? They are all perfect.

Chiko what a crazy article! Thanks for posting that. Interesting!

Red I hope you GLW is ok. I do not have much experience yet with chicken illnesses....knocking on wood.....you guys are scaring me so I went out and checked mine all over so far so good. I sure hope they all are ok, it is awful to lose one or have to put it down. I am crossing fingers for you guys!

Question----what do you do to help quiet down a lone chick? I sold all but one and she is l-o-n-e-l-y. Poor baby. I will have new friends on Saturday for her but is there anything that helps? I tried putting one of my polish in with her, but it scares her worse they are just too big. I did not think about this when the last batch sold, that she would be all by herself, or I would have asked them to pick up on Saturday.

Lisa, I've found that picking them up and holding them close to you while talking to them and stroking their back/chest/head sometimes helps. If you have a small stuffed animal, you could also try putting that in with her. It's not something I have much experience with, either. I usually have a buddy with my chicks because it tugs my heartstrings to hear them crying.

corvidae, that's frustrating but good, too. I'm glad to hear that you haven't lost any more chicks, and that there's a very good chance it wasn't pullorum. Let's hope things move on the up and up for you and get better!

Good idea Red---I put one of my dogs fluffy toys in there and this little one is leaning on it...snuggling a little I think. maybe that will help. I would hold her more but it is getting late so if i can just get her to settle down tonight I can give her lots of TLC tomorrow smile.png

Note to self--sell the last batch as a group, do not have one left over smile.png Always learning something with the chickens smile.png
