Got the "brooding area" and the nest boxes all finished up today in the new coop. I am off to hang some more wire and get the last door hung, then the inside is done - other than the new ventilation areas and the new window and the pop doors. (well they will be slide doors).

Still no more pips in the bator. I am hoping that when I wake up tomorrow there is some chicks in there.... this chick is so lonely and I feel so so bad for it the kids have dubbed it "Peepers".

Carol, I ended up with 5 Jaerhon chicks out of 9 fertile eggs. I am not 100% certain but I think its 3 boys 2 girls. And I have a home for each roo, what are the chances?? Julie would like one, and I'm keeping one. I have decided to not shut down the bator adn try to get some more Jaerhons for myself.  My goal is two breeding pens next year.

Dornes, don't give up just yet on the eggs. I just had a late pip from an olive egger, it's 2 days late. I was sure they were done, good thing I didn't toss them all. I just can't candle these, too dark. A few of these chicks seemed to have a bit of trouble getting thru the membrane; humidity has been 65-75, anything else I should be doing? This is my first time using a bator.  Jim, resident hatching expert???

How about giving Peepers a small stuff animal for a buddy, we did this when we had just 2 hatch out!

What ARE these animals?    And is the one pregnant?   It appears one has a collar on it.   The one without the collar looks pregnant    







Is ANYONE interested in some beautiful EE chicks?  I have 7 eggs due to hatch in a week.  They are blue wheaton Ameraucana(ROO)  X   (blue wheaton Ameraucana with a gold duck wing phoenix(HEN))  .  They are beautiful birds and lay quit a bit (green eggs) and are about 3 lb hens and 4 lb roos.   One of my projects that I was working on but I just need cut down on all these projects. Just pm me if you want them.  The hen looks quite phoenix like with a pea comb and some tufts. Very beautiful chocolatey red with lacings on her feathers. All I ask for these is pictures of when they are growing and when they grow up so I can see what they look like.  I can post pics in a couple of days.

H&R - I did give it a small stuffed animal for it to cuddle up with as well as a dish rag made into a small "nest" area for it to snuggle in. Nothing is working. I gave it a mirror to hopefully get it to feel like there is another chick in there with it - but nothing. I am going to give up all hope on the bator eggs come Friday.

Tiki - where are you located... if I don't get anything else from this hatch, I am going to need something to keep this little Peepers company. I can't take much more of the peeping of loneliness... lol.

I believe those are Elk. Is the collar on that one a tracking collar for the DNR to follow herd movement, I wonder. And - if you accidentally shot one with a collar on it - would you get in trouble?

Got the rest of the wire up in the coop - hung up some wall art (old pictures that I had laying around that I refuse to hang in my house). Swept it all out. Now we just need to get the runs up and then ventilation in. Super excited to get my girls moved into this new coop and leaving the meat birds in the other coop and run area.

Your chicks sound like they are going to be beauties, Tiki! I would love to see a pic of one of the parents.

Bummer, we had 1 that hatched but our friend had some extras so we got it buddies and that worked.  Good Luck and hope some more hatch out for you
