We're working on consistent potty training, house manners and introducing her to chickens and ducks.  She's pretty skittish but generally gets along well with our other dog, Princess (as named by the farm kids we got her from.)  So my husband named her Duchess.  I'll get her to the vet next week for a wellness check and then find out when to schedule her being fixed....  So, while I understand some of the sentiment expressed previously about people who dump their pets because they've changed their minds being XX#$$#%#$, often I think they're actually doing the pet a favor.  I'd rather have a pet be rehomed to a home that will provide them a good life, forever home than to be stuck with some XX#$$#%#$ who shouldn't have gotten the pet to begin with.  And then, there are those people who love their pets dearly but whose life circumstances change so dramatically they can no longer care for their pets and have to rehome them.  If you're fortunate enough to never be in that situation -- be grateful - and try not to judge all rehoming under one broad brush as no-gooders.  Now people who "collect" pets under false pretenses just so they can sell them -- that's a whole different case!  And I'm against breeding just for a puppy mills & $$ -- they do a huge disservice to all the decent breeders out there!  Ok, I'm off my soapbox now....

Haven't started seeds yet but want to!
Have a good day, folks!

Elaine that is one adorable pup! Kudos to you for adopting a dog in need!  Iclap.gif

She is old enough to spay so I'd think that it's just a matter of getting her in.  It is interesting. In Cali had a spay/neuter law that stated that all cats and dogs up for adoption had to be altered before they left the shelter.  They would fix puppies and kittens as young as 8 weeks.

I know the rescue we with fostered for would not let the dogs out for adoption until they were spayed/neutered. When we fostered pups we would take them around 6-8 weeks. I think Elaine got this pup from a private home idunno.gif

Cute pup Elaine! I can just see it turning it's head slightly when you talk to it. TO your the bestest! You know me so well but have to say I've never tried a smaller garden it just gets bigger every year. BUT THIS IS THE LAST TIME! Here's some fresh pics didn't notice the head feathers till the other day. Don't think it's a case of pillow head. The first one is Blacky the second is now Pillow head, the third is Bad hair, and the last 2 are of Cheeks.2-26-12 chix 001.jpg2-26-12 chix 002.jpg2-26-12 chix 003.jpg2-26-12 chix 004.jpg2-26-12 chix 005.jpg

Hi All!

Just popped in to comment on the pup! SO CUTE!!! Guess my youngest is thinking about a dog, have to talk to him about that. Not sure it will fit into his longer term plans. Some of the dogs we got were due to a change in their owner's circumstances, like going into a nursing home or death. But we also had our share of abandon animals too! I always thought someday I would like to get a purebred dog or cat from a breeder. But then, I could never pin down just what purebred I would want! It also seems just when our "inventory" of critters goes down to where we aren't tripping over them..... another comes along that needs a home. idunno.gifOh well, guess that's our fate... squeeze in what we can!

DrH... The ugly chicks are starting to get pretty! Love the head feathers! What kind are they?

OMG Finally caught up!! Almost 200 postings to read through. Spent the weekend at MOA for my DD12s Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation walk....good times.

MLH: Have you lived in Cali? Where? ( lived out there for 18 yrs)  And I thought all shelters required spay/neuter before adoption?

Congrats on all the new cute chicks!!! Its starting to feel like June 4th (When my chicks ship) is wayyyyyy along way off :-(

On FB-MPC site, there was an article about a farm in Cali that left est. 50,000 chickens without food for 2 wks....they are looking for foster homes. It states that a third were dead when they got there and the majority of the remaining are being put down.  It was an egg production site for A & L Poultry. That is really sickening, http://www.modbee.com/2012/02/22/2081184/thousands-of-hens-dead-at-stanislaus.html

My hen aprons arrived and I waited until today to put them on so I would be around....the poor girls!!! The boys chased them like they were invaders, the girls would catch it out of the corner of their eye....and take off running...kept trying to pull them off and they would get all crooked.....wind would blow them up almost over their heads etc.....not sure what I think about these right now.

So anyway until I can get a buried wire fence they can go in the pen when we're outside. Don't worry their not in it all the time, they are mostly inside dogs but I dont like leaving them inside when I am outside. I did work on the chicken coop a little. I got the two sides done, now I just need to cut the back wall and the front and add some hinges for a door. I did take some pics. It is a little over 10' 6" feet wide and about 7'9" deep and 5' 9" tall inside. The run will be about 20' wide and 40' long. The red line in the pic shows where the fence is going. The pile of limbs is being taken to the burn pile and will be burned once it isnt so windy. Oh and the gap at the top of the coop will have mesh covering it. And of course once its nice enough out the thing will get painted lol.
