Wisconsin "Cheeseheads" - Page 1795

  • I have a feeling that there may not be a good answer to this question. I mentioned earlier that of my three hens two have been picked over pretty good by the third. They look horrible. I tried blukote and saddles, but she just picks elsewhere. They are all still laying, but is the eventual outcome that the two will die. If i get a couple new chickens, will the third (stella) just start picking on them two. Is the best answer to just get rid of stella?

I would like to add two new pullets. I need quiet birds. Does anyone have orpingtons or austrlops or any other pretty birds that are good layers that hey are willing to part with. I live in the Holy Hill area.

Get rid of Stella, that's my vote.

Morning all!!

Just wanted to take a quick peek on the thread and mark my spot!  I know I'm bad!  I have to go with dh to do something.  He was blabbing but I was not paying any attention what so ever!  I need to seperate the baby bunnies from mom as they are ready.  I think mom is ready more then them!  So I have been thinking on how I need to rearrange the coop pens.....it's a puzzler.....Buzz is the hang up...what to do with Buzz???/.......hmmmm

Anyway super quick

Cind-sorry about your hen.

Dooner- I agree with BBP, I think Stella needs to go.  I think at this point she will pick at any chicken in the coop.  Usually they start picking from a protein defficancy.  At this point, I think it is habit and unless you want to debeak her there is not much you can do.  Me, I'd just process her and get some new pullets. Make sure you blue kote the bear ones when you put the newbies in with the established hens.  If they don't notice the difference they then should not start in with the picking/pecking. You may have to blue kote them for a while.  Their feather "beds" may or may not have been damaged from Stella.  If the feather beds have been damaged, then the their feathers may not grow back.

Orpingtons or Aussie's are a good choice because they tend to be more laid back them most breeds.

Angie I would be at that school giving the teachers a good ***** chewing! They have no RIGHT to treat your daughter that way when she has health issues! What is she was developmentally disabled and she was treated this way???? Reports to the school board would be good too! What if she ended up making herself a mess because the teacher did not let her out of class???? somad.gif  As far as the attendance goes, I would tell them to shove it. Grandpa is much more important.

I have had issues with our school this week so I am a little on edge about the Public School System. After jumping through their hoops so my son could take an antibiotic at the school, the doorknobs FORGOT to give him a dose. I know it is just an antibiotic, but what if it was insulin? My poor DS came home apologizing for not taking his medicine since he forgot about it! It is not a 9 yr old's job to remember such things!

I see Bf4 is not around tonight....... maybe she has another 'date'. :D

One last thing. Incubation temperature DOES NOT determine the sex of the chick! The sex is determined by gene, not temperature.

Well,if that's the case, She shouldn't be long !!! gig.gif

Out of my bigger chicks, I've noticed that the ones that I suspect are the roos are the friendlier of the bunch. They will go out of their way to fly over to sit on my lap. And they camp out too.

Does that mean they will be joining us at the Bash in May ? Bet they'll be a bit intimidated by the camp fire though !! gig.gif

I am crochetting squares for the BYC swap. I have already made about 3 sets, but I am doing another set because I am not satisfied with the ones I have. lol  Jury is still out on if I will be sendiing the older ones.  Also I am'Planning" a quilt on the computer.  I havent actually sewed yet.  The quilt planning is quite fun, being able to match the fabrics and blocks in the computer and see what it will look like in the end. Of course my computer is slow. This is my first adventures into quilt making but I think I will like it once I get going on it.  Lots of prep work though.  I also want to make some narket bags or garden totes out of pirina feed bags. Just got some handle material yesterday. big_smile.png

Good late morning again today!  I just got up at 10:45...am officially calling this a "sick day"  Sure wish I could shake this nonsense!  I am not good at being sick!  This morning was not good...I was supposed to go with DH and DD26 to watch DD20 in the horse show near Chicago.  I felt soooo crappy so my DD26 told me to go back to bed...no complaints about that for sure.  She even brought me some cold medicine to my bed! hugs.gif Since I usually never take that stuff it knocked me right out...I am feeling MUCH better right now.  I am not planning on doing anything but the bare minimum today though...I think I overdid yesterday.  But the barn sure looks good!  So a lazy day for me...hopefully it will help and I can recover for tomorrow.

THose chickens you found must be BIG champions WiChCh!  I got my trio of BAs that were best of show and 2nd BOS for $30! Either I got a deal or birds have gone way up in price! LOL!  They wont be getting any phone calls...

I guess my brain is still very tired cause I cant remember much of anything that I wanted to comment on!  Dooner--I have a couple of young birds that I could part with if you need a few more pullets. (they are mixes though) I would get rid of Stella too if you can only have a small number of birds.  I am thinking that she might feel crowded.  THat is the only time I have ever had a hen get nasty like that.  Any chance that is it? Do you see her picking on the other girls? Can you let them out to free range?  That might solve the problem for you if that is possible. Send me a PM.

I guess I will scare something up to eat...eggs and curds sounds good....Later--TErri O

I am feeling like such a good chicken keeper right now! I finally got the big 3 into the big dog crate. So then this week I can move the little 5 out of the chick tv upstairs to the basement brooder. I will have to take a picture of the big 3s new digs!

Terri, I'm sorry you're sick. It sure does suck. Sorry I shared my cold with you when we kissed... gig.gif JUST KIDDING! although you are kinda cute in your bibs for chores...

No eggs yet from the Calls though.

So adding two more male Budgies to my Aviary has caused the girls to become a bit hormonal! We have had WWF fights with the girls! The other night two of them were rolling around the bottom of the Aviary attacking each other; it was so bad they were making each other bloody (of course it does not help that they are sisters too)! It was bad enough that I had to get out my styptic pencil to stop the bleeding (one had a mild chest wound) With those birds being so small, just a drop of blood is a lot for them to lose.

Today I am going to spend a day with my girls in Oshkosh. The Oshkosh Museum is having the last day of their Bling exhibit (fashion), and across the street the Paine is having their annual Flower show. I figure after all of that we can hit the outlet mall.

Everyone enjoy the day!

BL4- Do you need another male? I have a pretty white headed, turquoise/sky blue boy that could use a new home.

Let me know.

On another note, Flopsy and Lulu the two blue cuckoo maran hens I got from Hurley have started laying again!!

I thought I would have to retire them. So I think I will get one more year out of them.

Yah!!

yuckyuck.gif  BigFam you are just too funny!  I think you have got to be the only person that likes those coveralls...even if you ARE joking! I am still laughing...I was wondering where this cold came from!  I just took them off for now...they are so muddy on the bottom from yesterday getting the horses caught up for the vet. Two of them made me walk across the paddock to bring them in! smack.gif  What a bunch of brats! So today I found this:

IMG_4286.JPG

I do believe little miss Roadrunner is broody! She is the Auntie to the one you have BigFam.  She is on several of her own eggs and 3 or 4 blue ones that I have NO IDEA what chicken laid!  I sure hope they hatch so I have an idea of who it is.  THat egg eating skunk still seems to be around...I could smell it in the barn again this morning.  Last night about 10 the geese were creating a racket so I am thinking that might be when it walks through.  I have had a trap out for it several times but cant seem to catch it! (I only catch my chickens in it...even with eggs for bait!)

Here is a pic of the tree that the turkey can no longer roost in:

IMG_4282.JPG

I didnt like him up there because he roosted right above the trough that I feed corn in and he left a bunch of "presents" in it every morning!  So we cut and hauled that away yesterday (when I should have been resting) and then I worked all day in the barn...thus today I am still not feeling good!

I think I am going to go upstairs and have a little nap.  Later!  Terri O
