With several comments about finding it hard to obtain good quality Brabanters, has anyone purchased from Sandhill? Where have you found good quality stock? If our town changes it's regs, this is...
-
I like everything about it except how it looks right now. I know it lays decently. It is a great part of my great waterfowl flock.
-
First, watching a runner duck run is awesome. They can find their own food. They aren't like pekins in water. Mine haven't started laying but I heard their decent.
-
Its not as fat and slow as a pekin, but its not frail either. I want a mallard but I don't want a flying bird. The rouen is great for that.
-
They are my calmest birds and are easiest to catch. They eat less than Pekins. I heard they also lay well, but mine are younger.

Cind, I'm so glad you found some good samaritans that were willing to help someone else out. That is always so nice to hear. Excellent idea about the fresh eggs too. Maybe you'll have some new customers? As far as the Doms, thank you so much! You are awesome.
Ideally, I would love to have some that would be around the same age as the lavs that I'm hopefully getting from Carol. Offhand I can't remember when they are due, though. Anyway, I think 1 boy & 2 or 3 girls? I'll ask DH & see what he thinks. I completely understand about your house being a mess. As soon as the weather starts getting nice, we are always outside doing something or another, and the house gets neglected bad, real bad. Of course it's still getting neglected right now....... ![]()
DrH, I think Tat said he would be crazy busy making soap for a while. ![]()
Kris, that pic of your DD is so cute! And those fuzzy butts! I'm kinda suprised you didn't name the white silkie Leia, though.

CC--I believe you have all hens! (WOW!) Must be because you wanted a roo? The one that is more gold looked like maybe it could be a roo....they sure are looking fine!
Good for you MXM on the security measures! Better to have them in place right from the get go then to have to rebuild!
I don't even want to say it out loud for fear of jinxing it, but if they are indeed all girls, or a vast majority, I must apologize to you, Terri, but I don't think I will want to part with Moose.
He's a ladies man
I hope! One of those buffs has had me guessing for a long time. I've posted her pic a few times on here for opinions. I guess I'll figure it out sooner or later. ![]()
Mxm, I agree with Terri 100%. There is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to predator-proofing your coop. And getting it done before you get your birds is the smartest possible plan. You did your homework well, and your birdies will love you for it. ![]()
Heather, all the best wishes for you, the other Heather & her family. Be strong for your friend. She will need you.

Unk, so sorry to hear about your mom. Pneumonia is tough at any age. Best wishes for you & her and the rest of the family.

Celtic... we actually got that silkie from carol after we had Leia... but after seeing those sweet floppy feet and goofy behavior, yoda must be that name!!! Now we are hoping they are all girls, but there are only two girls in star wars and amidala is a mouthful!
And we have a number of princesses and a few superheros to boot. Ah to let kids name chickens!!

Quick cute/puzzling story: I sell eggs at work and have recently been bringing in duck eggs from BBP. My SO has an office with a fridge so he gets to be the "pick up spot". Today when he arrived he has an egg wrapped in bubble wrap placed in a bowl, with a note on it "Please save this wild baby duck egg". WTH??? So now trying to confirm who dropped it off...and WHAT I am suppossed to do with it?
(BBP-Interested in tryng to hatch it?
)
Update: The note mentioned he found in laying in his yard. Its light cream in color and the size of a med/lrg chicken egg
Strange, this exact thing happened to my friend Julie last month. SOmeone brought her a random egg they found in their yard. Guess who she knows who has a bator? Yep, stuck in in mine for a week or two before I knew it was bad and tossed it.
Dont you find it odd that people will put more work into choosing their mechanic or house contractor than they will into choosing the person who grows their food?

Well, I just wanted to catch up here and say......
The first wave of Bobwhites are hatching!!!!!!!

These are the first part of a 2 part effort! LOL! The second half is in the Foolish Hatch.
They are on day 23. I was starting to get worried that I screwed up the humidity or something and they would not hatch so far I have three out and I lost count of the pips....I was not expecting anything to happen so I did not have the brooder set up. Well, I heard a pipping chick and though shoot! they are hatching...CRAP!!!! The brooder! So I kicked it in high gear and got the brooder set up in like 2 minutes complete with water and I have their Grow Gel packet at the ready. I even remembered to put marbles in their waterer!
I love hatching quail. Chickens are sooooo worry-ing and I feel like I have an ulcer by the time they hatch. Quail....not so much. From pip to zip to out it's like lightening....Well, I best see how the first hatchlings are doing....
