Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Had some info on where to buy Cornish chicks local and now I can't find the info. There's a hatchery somewhere not too far from here. Anybody know? Would like to start my next batch of meat birds.
Did you mean Cornish, as in just heritage Cornish chickens, or do you mean the Cornish X meat birds? If you have a lead on the heritage white Cornish please let me know, I would love to have a few of them!!!

*Peeks in, waves hello.* No chickens or coop yet but I am planning. Plotting. Saving up for supplies.

Absolutely! Chicken math in LadyBehir's future, I'm sure!

Just picked these and ate them immediately after the photo! This is from a raspberry patch that is very neglected, and does not get enough sun etc...............and a day or two had a similar handful! Usually , when I cared for the bush more----I got much much less because the birds ate them all! I think the rain has something to do with it-------but just wanted to share this! also----------I just put all the materials I have gathered over 2 weeks from craigs list, peoples basements, my basement, etc etc.....all the free and possible useful materials on my front porch................so I can start doing the building even if it rains. Its not a big porch but it has a roof. remember my initial idea was just converting the dresser into a small coop for 2-3 bantams................and my avatar picture is that dresser. Considering what materials I have gathered -------------and all the reading and looking at pictures I have done....................and considering my very minimal carpentry skills--------------------I wonder what I will end up with????? stay tuned for the ungoing saga of Lisa's first DIY coop! I don't know how the story will proceed but I do know the beginning and some of the features that will be encountered!
I love fresh berries. At least all this rain is good for something! My garden tripled in size these last few days. Good luck with the coop. Still waiting on more eggs to hatch.......

First question regarding combs:
My rooster RIR mix has a big red comb. Sometimes it's got a little bit of black. I thought he got frostbite this winter, but then it went away. Sometimes I'll look and it's completely red, sometimes there is black on it.

What could this be?

okay---cant believe I am responding to this..............but I was just reading in the learning section about chicken diseases etc...........and there is some type of pox or something like that
and they say to separate the chicken and there is a treatment for it..............

check out the learning center-----keeping your flock healthy part..........and then chicken diseases heading.............I think that is where I read this......

Just be aware, it looks like that light is taster for 160W. I have my brooder condo equipped with dimes on each level. I believe mine are rated at 600. Cost a little more however.
Long term I would like to det up a thermostat controlled system since my house has wide temperature swings.

I have to be honest, you are speaking Greek! I am no sure what you are saying................. The one I got is good up to a 250W. I only have a 125W or 100W in it. I am sensing some danger from what you said. Am I alright with that???

That was covered in the link that Sally provided as well.
It's not that. This isn't spots...it looks like frostbite...only it disappears. I've tried to find out if it's a disease or frostbite. It shows up, then it disappears.

Is it black or blue? When it's especially hot out, chickens run a lot of bloodflow through their combs during the summer because the thin skin allows the blood to cool easily. Sometimes when the concentration of blood in the comb is high or the blood is low in oxygen, the comb can appear a darker red or even a blue or blackish, especially towards the back of the comb. Of course, it's easier to see things like this in birds with big tall single combs like your rooster or mediterranean breeds like Leghorns. Things like this are no big deal, but there's always the off chance that the discoloration is due to illness, so keep an eye on him to make sure he's acting normally

Yup! Chickens can get both Dry pox and Wet pox. Both originate from the same virus strain, but it's considered wet pox when the warts are in the bird's mouth or upper respiratory tract. Pox is a virus and has no definite treatment and takes a very long time to go away. It's hard to prevent it due to the fact that it is transferred via parasitic insects like mosquitoes, but I believe there is a vaccine for fowl pox? I'm not sure. I personally haven't seen it in the immediate area or had it in my flock...
