Just a thought....has anyone ever cooked up a caught racoon and fed it to their chooks???? Would seem kinda fitting.....and a good cost saving idea....

some people eat them down south, my brother used to catch coons and possums and sell them to a guy called possum joe, he cleaned them and sold them , he had a little farmers stand.

Not sure who it was I just offered equipment to...but the offer stands for all,,,we set up for processing every sat afternoon,,,if you have anything to process you are welcome to load up and come over,,,,the equipment makes a huge difference in the processing.....you will need to bring either bags or a cooler,,,,I throw everything in a cooler of ice water and finish up after dinner with them

You can clip wings any time after feathers begin to come in. Just be very careful not to hit the blood feathers or clip too short. Only do 1 side. Some birds can still get off the ground even with clipped wings so just be aware this may not solve the problem. I agree with the suggestion of netting. My runs are only 4ft high fence, but they are all covered with netting. I just put a support beam across the middle that is about 7-8 ft high & loop the netting over it so I can still walk into the run. Trees can pose a bit of a problem, but I have a friend who just cut all the low branches from the trees in her run & ran the netting around them.

I am going to consider netting, just because I don't want birds of prey swooping in. As far as the wings, I already clipped them last night- why only one side? My family used to have chickens for years and always did two, is there some kind of harm to that?

clip their wings(youtube has videos)....my run is 5'by20'...I have a tarp over a portion near the coop for rain...then use fishing line chris crossed over the rest. You have areas to stand up to work but the lines are close enough to discourage any hawk to fly through....also, I had an issue before with birds getting over my 4' fence....after clipping they no longer challenge the fence but have no troubles flying up on my patio table to steal scratch when left out....go figure....my two cents...

My birds have a pretty decent sized run- about 11 ft by 30 ft (or 25, not sure), and I am going to almost double it once they hit two months. They have plenty of space and I hate that they are trying to escape, but animals are animals.
But thanks for the advice! I am gonna look into all the different options. :)

So my hens are all 6 moths old and to date we have gotten 1 egg. They are all RIR and possibly production breed. It was this past tuesday and we haven't gotten another one since. So obviously only one of the girls is laying but shouldn't she have continued to lay more than 1 egg in 4 days?

Any one near the Bloomsburg or Williamsport area have hatching eggs? I would prefer to pick up eggs rather than ship especially since this will be my first hatch on the incubator. Barnyard mix is fine, don't need purebred anything fancy. Thanks!!! I'm super excited!

Eric:

Mine were day olds on 02/24/13....all have laid an egg or two, but, 5 are semi regular...I have heritage breeds..:2BOs, 2GLWs, 2SG Dorkings...(2 baby marans and a CCL roo). I am getting mostly 3 eggs a day....and a few times four...and occasionally two a day....

I am not that experienced, but if you free range, you should check under bushes....somewhere I herd to put golf balls in the nesting boxes....my two cents...hope this helps...
