CHAD! Where ya been hiding? And yes, I am on board with the 'need my own zoo' idea. Watching the animals gives me a sense of peace I can not find elsewhere. We finally got our pigs processed, how bout u?

Galgo! 'you stalk us, we crash your party?' Sounds like a plan!
Working a different job where I can make more money and afford more critters LOL

You realize to most people what you just said sounds like it may be illegal in most states????

but that's ok.... we understand what you meant (although I'm still not sure about the 'getting drunk with a llama thing!)

and yep, have often wished there was a good way to be able to have even more animals but have them support their own feed bill!
I'm sure as long as the llama is over 21 it should be legal

It all depends on how old the lama is.....
See above comment ....

Galgo....we're randomly having an alcohol free bachelor/bachelorette party....
WTH! Alcohol free!? Is it an Amish get together?

Chad,
There is a really nice alpaca farm about a half mile up the road from my place. They sell them and offer advice, etc.

Just trying to enable.
Thanks Ray! Your one hell of a enabling friend

Twelve step program:
1 dog
2 cat
3 chickens
4 turkeys
5 rabbits
6 goat
7 pig
8 cow
9 alpaca
10 horse
11 llama
12 well, you get the idea!
12 step program...could be 12 days of Christmas.

Does anyone know who I contact in the southwestern part of pa about getting a chicken tested? We had a sick chicken that I treated with Tylan and she had gotten better, then recently declined. We separated her again to get her some one on one time with food and water. She was very hungry and thirst last night and was eating and drinking well today. I went to the coop to get her some more chick feed, scratch and BOSS. Before I went down, she was standing up at the water dish. When I came back up, she was on her side trying to die. I helped her on her way, but want to see what we are dealing with.
Help?
Should be sent to the state lab for testing if she's already expired.

I made some earrings with turkey and chicken feathers from the molt, so many feathers everywhere! It seemed like a shame to let the feathers rot, they are so pretty.

Nice! Do you know anyone that makes jewelry with glass?

Thank you :D No I do not. That would be pretty.

I had opportunity to get into an old iron furnace with the garbage company and I got a bunch of rocks from the old furnace. They are iron slag(looks like smoked glass) copper and cobalt. The project manager said many people hunt for this stuff to make jewelry. If I had the time and desire the stuff is really cool looking!

I'm kinda just throwing this out there.....

I realize it's like walking into AA and asking if anyone ever walked into a bar and wanted to own their own bar.....

So anyway....Has anyone ever just wanted a cornucopia of animals and figured on justifying it as having your own petting zoo.....just for your family and friends....or just wanted to get drunk with a llama.....

I have been eyeing animals up....alpacas for sale.....dwarf nigerian goats....emu.....and a lot of really cool birds! .......a donkey....a potbelly pig named wilbur.............

So has anyone ever felt like this?

I have and I probably would if i had the room. And i also think about what if i want to go away then what do we do?? My hubby keeps telling me to get goats and he wants to start keeping bees next year. I would probably own a horse or two if I could. But this is our first house and we only have an acre! Next time i am shooting for my dream house with a TON of land!

That would give us 2 dogs which one should be considered a small horse (great dane) two cats, 7 chickens, 1 55 gallon fish tank and 1 30 gallon fish tank. Plus sometimes we have fostered pups till they find a home. We are also hoping to have puppies sometime around Christmas....so our house is full!

Hmmm....yeah bees would work for me too. .......I am paying the neighbor to tend animals while I'm away until we get the house up on the land the way I want.

The person behind us we dont get along with....they live less then 50 yards behind us (there is a little patch of woods behind us and they live on the other side) they thought it was a fun idea to shoot guns right behind us (paralle to our house) and the one time i heard it bouncing through the woods and wizzing near me. They rent off the turkery farm owner that wasnt happy when my chickens decided to go exploring. The other guy next to us is a truck driver he is never home. On the other side of us is an elder couple i wouldnt want to bug them to do that. The people that live across the road from us probably would but they have two girls and when they come over the like to terrorize my poor chicks I would be afriad to come home to an empty coop!

Reading the comments on this is making me so mad.

Well you've got some folks being the usual ignorant "We're the majority" types. No sympathy for them. It's Evan's land, and his business.

The article points out that these particular chickens got out into the neighbor's yards. No sympathy for Evan in this case.

My girls got out, so we've penned them up until we can secure the property and patch the remainder of the fencing. I like free ranging, but that can't come at the expense of my neighbor's properties. By the same token, I expect my neighbors to keep their dogs out of my yard, and they do. We stay on good terms because we respect each other's rights.

What I'm seeing in this story, and (more so the comments...) is that folks on both sides are generally failing at what I like to call the obvious rule...

"Don't be a ****".

Evan needs to keep his flock under control, keep the noise and smell under control. His neighbors need to mind their own business unless he fails those duties. The township needs to stay out of folks business in general until called upon.

Oddly, I'm most encouraged by Commissioner O'Brien. He didn't immediately take sides, didn't offhand dismiss Evan due to his age, and seems more interested in finding out what's going on. It's pretty rare that you see any sort of elected official who doesn't come off seeming like he knows all the answers and already has his mind made up. Certainly wouldn't happen here in Delaware County!

I'm hoping Evan gets his changes passed, I'm even more hoping he gets his flock under control. :) Bad press is the last thing we need, right?

Yeah All the chicken people from BYC need to get on this thread, lets see what the majority is for that one A-hole!! Right to Piece and Quiet!! What about Yappy dogs!?!!? Grrrrr
I do agree some restrictions, but they are just too strict rules. Eliminate the Rooster.. and set real numbers. 40 is a lot, he was on 4 acres.

And I agree, keep it under control and be mindful of your neighbors.

So i gave the girls some new digs...in hopes they will start laying....
fl.gif

I got a bale of hay for free so thats what i have been using till winter hits but fresh clean nesting with some soft shavings..

I found curtains that i had in my room at my old apartment when I was in college so I hug them and put slits in them to give the girls some privacy...plus my silkie and the two girls in the picture like to all pile into one and sleep at night. Hoping this will make them stop.

Some curtains on their big window! haha

And this was my second roost. It was almost like a shelf so i put a piece of plastic so their wasnt any openings on the bottom. stuffed it with some hay and shavings..hoping the silkie and the new girls will cuddle there to sleep since the other girls sleep on the higher roost. I also put plastic over the other "window" behind this roost to close it up for the winter.

Plus I put plastic over the roof of their run and they got a new feeder yesterday! Spoiled girls! or just a crazy chicken mom!
