Sad day today... For those of you who knew of my hen Rags, the hen i did the internal laying surgery on. Well last night we had a fox, or some kind of predator break in to our grow out pen. She was the proud mommy of 8 chicks. Today Rags is no longer with us. The fox got her and 5 of her chicks. I found three of her chicks wondering around our yard this morning. The kids and i went in to detective mode. We found what was left of Rags but no sign of the other chicks. So my only assumption is that the predator got them too. The three chicks that are left seem unharmed, they are eating, drinking, and eating normal. I don't know how they do it. I would be devastated if something like that happened to y mom.. But i guess that is what makes us human... Anyhow, i had errands to run today so i tied my dog out by the pens to make sure it didn't come back while we were gone. Over the rainbow bridge you go Rags, maybe I'll see you some day...

Anyone know where I can get some food grade diatomaceous earth in the delco area?

TSC....hahaha, sorry had to laugh cause they DO have that there
tongue.png
...just make sure you ask someone to point you in the right direction. I use it in with the sand & also PDZ...no smell and dry. Just be careful with the dust..nasty. I wear a mask...it also helps to keep the neighbor kids away....

...yeah, that was a joke...

PA chicken lover---------------I am very sorry to hear about your chicken loss.   I would be very very sad to find this situation.   I cant imagine finding "parts" of my beloved pets!
let alone just having them gone..............I get rather attached and all..............sounds like you do to...........

thinking about you and your family.............

good luck raising the chicks.........glad they survived!

On a happier note................I would like to encourage this group to continue to talk pumpkins and chickens............its seasonally correct and kinda fun..................I am eager to share some pumpkins with my girls ...............as soon as this hot weather passes a bit!

Thanks, yes I do get rather attached to my pets. I am really missing my Rags.........

I have never given my birds pumpkins.... is it something they normally like or is it an acquired taste for them? Speaking of pumpkins, I need to get busy making my pumpkin butter... we didn't get many apples off our tree's this year so I didn't get to make Apple butter. But we did manage to grow some large pumpkins. One must weigh 100lbs or more. I can hardly move it let alone pick it up. Lol

Thanks LittleMissPurdy, I plan on spoiling them as much as possible. They are very skittish today. Every little sound seems to make them jump. Trying to figure out what to do with them for tonight... bring them inside in a cage, or leave them out...... Not sure.....

I'm so sorry for you loss. It's always hard to lose pets, so I can't imagine how hard it is when they are taken away so savagely. :hit. I am glad at least you have a few lovely chicks to raise and enjoy.

We finally purchased the materials needed for the tube-feeder & nipple water..well, we are waiting on the nipples. We couldn't find them anywhere but online
hu.gif
...you would think mills or TSC would have those things..but, NOOOo....so, going to take pics of the operation tomorrow, we will be putting the feeder together. Hopefully all will go well.
fl.gif
....looking forward to yet another "chicken" project...have been alot more of these than I thought, but every time you look there is yet another "great-idea" that will work so wonderfully for our coop
smack.gif
....yeah, when the wallet starts to cry you know your done for awhile..

... It has been so awesome to look in the fridge and see at least a dozen eggs on a constant basis!! Now that both the "big-girls" are laying, it has been "what can I make with eggs tonight?" and, just in time for the baking 'season'!!
droolin.gif
...I know "a dozen' eggs is mostly laughable here, most of you lucky's have dozens of feathered friends..but I am feeling pretty good right now about my 3 ladies....hahah

...Hope every one is having a good day/night

I am also glad that i still have a few of her chicks. And thank you for your kind words everyone. The chicks are safe inside tonight. Not taking any chances on it coming back for the rest..

..
I just can't believe that a place like TSC didn't have them( Water-nipples)...I wrote to the company, explaining how "backyard" chicken keeping/animal raising has increased it's numbers enough to start expanding their poultry line/supplies..ie: chicken water nipples!
OH, yeah..and smaller sized buckets(1-5 gal) WITH lids...these things are like the chupacapra of supplies..can't find anything-anywhere. Lowes/wally world/kmart...any little home center/hard-wear store..no-where. I looked online at some larger companies..most have you buying 100 ct....I really don't need 100 buckets, but then I though..maybe I could sell them to others who can't find the darned things...we will see.
So...How is everyone this beautiful morning?

here are some pics of the lavender I got at the "get-together" at Galgos place(kiomey-plants(sp?)...nothing to do with chickens

..I have a bad history with the ability to grow this stuff and now look!!

There are actually two different plants ...will be separating and "re-doing" the cutting garden next year...

Went to the Delmont Apple N' Arts Festival yesterday and got this ADORABLE little sign. It was only $1!!

It's now hanging in the coop. How punny of me.
