I am also wondering how this winter is going to go. it will be interesting to be sure. 23/27 of my children are too young to have seen snow. I am too new to chickens to know how they will behave.
I am posting to share about the past few days around here:
Monday's rain flooded the front half of the big coop, and I am still puzzled on how. First time I have a had a problem, even with strong winds blowing. I slipped twice in the mud that had been the run (yuck!). Ironically I wasn't grossed out by being covered in poop. The last five months sure have changed me!
So I was cleaning the coop out yesterday morning, and collected the eggs. I missed collecting Monday, and ended up with 8 eggs yesterday! Please understand, I have been getting 3 a day for about a month, and I have 5 layers. Penny, the youngest, has been laying daily. The others had been, but it seems a lot of ppl are having problems with their girls not laying. Anyway! That means that someone was picking back up for two days in a row! Woo hoo!
Now the funny part. The last egg was found while refreshing the litter in the nest box. I stuck it in my pocket, and continued with my work. Half an hour later, I smacked my pocket, and exclaimed, "what the heck is in my pocket?!" The dog looked at me, and I looked at him, and winced. The egg didn't break. Whew!
