Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Need to process the last of the meat pen today, it is only 3 birds so will go quickly,,, next weekend is the extra quail and a few ducks, after that I will be done for the winter, not sure what I will do on sat afternoons.......

I think CC is bringing his turkey today to process, he will be surprised how fast turkey processing goes with the equipment, I used to do no more than 2 a day now we can clean a pen out in a couple hours......moral is if you get the chance to buy your own equipment, jump at it.

side note, my equipment will be sitting unused, if you need to process and do not mind the trip, go ahead and crate them up for the trip....we do set up some of the equipment inside the shed so you would not be standing out in the cold...just out of curiosity, we do have equipment for larger animals, we used to process our own pigs back when my late uncle used to come help, since we both had specific jobs to do we never paid attention to the rest of the process, now we have the equipment but no idea how to do the processing or cutting....we have scrapers and the large black kettles and a few other things... anyone out there know how to do this if we should try it again

Funny you mention that... DH and I are hoping to attend a class on hog butchering in January, not sure of date yet. We are both interested in raising a hog or two for our own use and would like a chance to have a 'hands on' experience for the processing. We don't have the property to raise a pig now, but it is in our plan for the next few years.

Quote: for us it was a family thing, we raised the pigs and provided the place for processing,,,,we have some of the equipment, but not all since it was a weekend event among 5 households some parts of it did not get done at the farm...the meat was later seperated and everyone got some...

we were the young generation of the operation and sadly most of those involved have since passed,,,really wish I would of paid more attention

Well the chooks are hugging it tight today...mistook one of the hawks...it was a bald Eagle and it came back a couple of hours later (or a different one....what a PIA and I have to go to work soon....

Ditto. Grandfather was a tenant farmer, butchered in winter. It was the depression, so they lived on scraps. Guess thats why I like heart, tongue, etc. That was my fathers comfort food.
Btw, on my way.

New here, but want to be counted in with my PA peeps! :) Southeast PA for me. No flock yet, that's why I'm here, to learn more!

Hello & Welcome...a whole lot of nice, informative folks here!!!!
Oh yeah, those seabrights are a 'whole lotta attitude' in an itty bitty package. Are you the one that was looking for a Marans? I may have a pullet available. My zip is 19375. Lemme know in a PM if you're interested and I'll get an exact hatch date, price and permission from 'the boss'.

There is a good possibility, are you adding light? My Orps were hatched at the end of April, beginning of May and not an egg yet!

so nice Blarney!!!! love those Orps!!

My Buff Orpington is FINALLY starting to go through the motions of laying eggs. Her face, wattles, and comb have been reddening up over the past couple of weeks but that's about the extent of it. Today an hour or two after the Leghorn and Gold Sebright made their daily contributions I heard a new version of the "Egg Song". I thought it had to be the Orpington as nobody else is showing any signs of growing up like she is. Gave her an hour and took a peek, no eggs anywhere. She WAS busily digging a nest in the straw in two corners of the coop and the 2nd nest box as well as the far nest box where my two currently laying hens lay. So I am expecting an egg tonight or a 3rd tomorrow morning.

She was supposedly hatched mid May so that should make her a little over six months. Her wattles and comb look a lot like your lovely girl up there. So *fingers crossed that yours will start laying as well soon*

Thank You Katt!, carrying off pit-bulls? Bald eagles circling? Yikes!

I've been at the Italian Market most of the day, haven't checked for birds of prey, hope everyone's ok.
