We are definitely going to be raising turkeys this spring.
Have a local store..Calico Creek.. that will have them. Going to look into what they normally get in or what we may have to order.
Does anyone feed their turkeys special feed..maybe something with a higher protein or would they be okay with like a "flock feeder"? ...Looking on the "turkey" threads for some knowledge, but really like to hear from you all too!.. Any "you should know this" is always welcomed!

I use meatbird feed for turkeys. It's 24-26% depending on brand. My layer mash from the mill is 18%. I switch my breeders to layer when they are over 6 months old. My meat turkeys stay on the higher protien until processing.

This could depend on the breed that you get,,,,For heritage I do nothing different than my chickens, they start on chick feed and go to a grower feed that is 20%...I do not feed layer or medicated feed....now if I get a batch of chickens or other birds that are strictly for meat they go on a finishing food with higher protein, I also push calcium supplement in the beginning, I do not have any leg problems since doing this and I raise 12 pound cornish x

I had no idea what I was doing, but used 24% starter for 5 weeks, then 20% for the duration. I think flock raiser its 20%.
Everyone...THANK YOU!!! this is very helpful!!! ...this gives a Great picture..!
Have not figured on the breed yet, must find out what is available, what can be ordered..will go from there..Thank You again!!!

my girls (8 rhode island reds) are only laying 2 sometimes 3 eggs eever since the clocks changed. this is their second winter and i use no heat nor lights. last winter they slowed some but not like this. my wife thinks its time to order babys and put these to the freezer. she said after to years they stop laying. is this true? any info would be awsome

I personally don't think it's time for the freezer yet. Sure, hens' best production is during their first 2-3 years, but they are often good layers past that. Is there a certain reason you NEED amazing producers? Do you sell eggs? If you don't, I wouldn't worry about it. I have a 3 year old light sussex barnevelder mix who lays everyday (except for winter). I read a chicken blog, and the woman has a Black Australorp that's 8 YEARS OLD and still laying every day. That's actually pretty uncommon, but if you give them a very good diet and they're healthy birds, I'd say you'll get another year of great production out of them. That is, if they're just providing for you and your family. If you're selling eggs, I'd get maybe 4 new pullets just to add a little more supply.

PZY:

what is the age of your birds and what are your expectations...I only do heritage birds and not production....my flock is pet oriented and while I eat chicken, I will not eat my pets...seems to me the question is Pets or Meat......
