She got grabbed by a predator our first night at the new farm. Blu-kote comes in handy for more than just birds.

Quote: slow cook that bird, and remember that the older the bird the more flavor you will get from the meat..will not be much meat on a leghorn but what you do get will be very flavorful..

I would go crockpot and then make a chicken corn soup in the broth.

does this mean that you will have an opening for a new rooster ??

I need some advice. Our leghorn rooster has been with us for 2 years and we never had a problem with him. Now he is attacking our Campine hen. He wouldn't let her leave the coop to eat or drink or he would attack her. One day I noticed she was covered in blood. Her nest box had blood splatters all over it and the inside of the coop looked like a war zone. He must have cornered her and just kept pecking until she got away. I never saw him peck any other hen but one of our white rock hens had a really bloody comb the other day. I took him out of the coop and run. He is by himself now until we can cull him. Today when I was giving the girls water he got back in and went right for her. Have any of you had this happen before? Why would he take such a dislike for her like that?

Now for my other question. We NEVER processed a chicken before. Hubby has been on Youtube watching videos on how to do it. Since the rooster is 2 years old I read the meat will be tough. Any suggestions on how to cook it?

imho....maybe you could slow cook him and feed him back to the girls he was harassing....if you have the room, maybe isolate him for a week then re-introduce him to the flock....my two cents....

Oh yeah! I knew you were hooked!

Troyer, VERY cool birds!

Stake, I STILL haven't made the hard cider....maybe today's the day.... Although I should be cleaning coops before the rain heads our way.

Well B:

you still have a day or two to get a new years batch going....hint hint....

I can't seem to keep up with the thread lately... I missed the last 200 or so posts!

Today was pen cleaning day. Man, I just set these pens and cages up! I also just cleaned a couple of the pens out less than 2wks ago. We've been having issues with the waterers leaking and of course, it makes a stinky mess in the pens. The first time I was hanging the waterers and Devon (son) was not putting enough water in them for them to hang straight. This time he decided to let them sit crooked and let the spouts face the wrong way. He does not pay attention to what he's doing. I just did the waterers with him 2-3 days ago and the back pen was not a gross slop hole. Yesterday it was. So, off to buy shavings.

I will say this much, it used to take us a whole day to do all the pens. It took us less than 4hrs. I even made shavings keepers for in front of the pen doors. At least the shed doesn't stink anymore.

Good Job! On getting the smell down, I always think about keeping the waterers level, I never give much thought to the spout, then DS set me straight.
