What the h-e double hockey sticks is going on today?
I hope the screaming libertarian was yelling at the government and no a person?!? I am not saying I am sharing there opinion, but that just seemed to come out of nowhere, and hey please express yourself. We don't usually talk politics around here. I guess this is a good example of why we don't................................................
Well I have lost 2 birds to the cold so far :-( One of them was my mostly naked hen. I don't know what got into her, molting during the sub-zero temps??? The other was a chick that was with a broody hen, around 6 weeks old. Mom was starting to "wean" the peep, and I guess peep didn't do well. Oh well survival of the fittest.
I want peeps so bad that I ordered an assortment of 25 pullets: http://www.idealpoultry.com/item.html Anybody who knows me is probably thinking what the heck! I know, its been since 8/13 that I hatched anything. I have chick fever!!!!!!!
I am also going to use them as my test babies to make sure everything goes okay. I don't wanna repeat of 2013. Besides, my eggs are frozen by the time I can collect them!
I also wanna chime in on the Mycoplasma stuff. Most back yard flock owner have birds that are carrying it. It gets passed along through wild birds, rodents, and bringing carriers into your flock. It usually happens between 4-6 weeks of age. You treat them with Aureomycin for 10 days, and usually 90% of the birds will survive, and live a long healthy life. Some people will totally destroy there flock and start from scratch. To there disappointment, there new flock get reinfected. Almost every source of breeder, especially show homes, the birds will test positive for it. It is a virus. Its like testing a human for the common cold, yes we have had it............... Some of this is my opinion, so of it is fact. I cannot keep wild birds, and every rodent away from my chickens. It just is not possible. So I am probably Mycoplasma positive, but it is NOT the end of the world. As far as bathing, and dipping the eggs. I usually doesn't work, all the prep, and the removal of the bloom from the egg, it will not hatch.
