Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

This is my 2nd winter with my banty Polish girl. Her name is Einstein and she rules the roost!!!!

Sally my netting stayed up this year. We had built a roofing section, not that big but big enough to help alittle! We just used zip ties to attach it to the fencing. Last year our one run took a big hit and all the poles collapsed with the netting. Had to reinforce everything and put 2 sections of roofing on that run.

That's too funny! We have a polish named Einstein too, Alberta Einstein...lol

I take a lot of heat for thinking like this, I often hear, you could have saved that bird easily with just a little ....... well the thing is if a bird is getting sick, I do not want it in my flock, and i truely believe that all the antibiotics given to birds is part of the problem, it is building resistance,,,,,I do however keep things like bluekote on hand for accidents.tQuote:
Quote: I mix whole grains in with my ferment, and the batch of cornish hens that I just did was straight grain the entire time, this was not fermented due to weather though.

I agree with troy. I don't use medicated starter because SFH seem to have problems with it, they develop problems, so I just quit using it all together. I do put lumps of dirt and grass in my brooder to build resistance to cocci. I believe that is what medicated is for.
My run has an open top. My losses this winter have been to predators. I guess the smart and strong survive.
couldn't have said it better,,,I have not had 1 cocci incident since I quit using medicated feed

Quote: I use 3 different types of water, if I am hauling hot water from home it is treated town water, and at the farm depending on which faucet I use some goes thru the water softener and some don't...only thing I ever noticed is that the straight well water freezes quicker. and as for the birds the do not seem to care, they prefer the mud puddle water

Hey everybody! Loving the beautiful ice pictures, but sad for everyone who has lost power. We lost it from 8-2 yesterday, but that's wasn't bad at all. We were most concerned for our parrots who are used to tropical weather. :)

I'm so thankful we have gas cooking too, so when the power does go out, we can still cook! We are fairly well prepared except for keeping the parrots warm.

Everybody stay warm and safe! And keep up with those gorgeous duck and chicky pictures!

Einie is my son's little polish pullet. We have a few "pets" that are named. Meat birds, spare roos, bb poults...no names. Most of the layer flock & my son's "poof heads"...named. The pair of geese & my 4 little call hens...named. The 6 breeder turkeys...named. The 7 ancona ducks I can't tell apart...The 7 Dwarves...lol

I know most of you have trees but OMG gorgeous this morning!!

how beautiful iced up trees are when the morning sun hits them,... Images DO NOT do the scene here justice not even close!!! IT was AMAZINGLY beautiful yet again!

Did a quick walk around this morning. Looks like I have some firewood for next year. A lot of my huge pines took major damage. No harm, but all my tractor paths are blocked and pine branches aren't good for anything but brush piles. At least no major damage I see.
If anyone near 17552 needs to borrow a generator, ask.I know a lot of people are still without power.
