hahaha, oh yeah, just a little south..hahaha I am telling you what, that does make ALL the difference in the world!! April 7th is way to early here...haha...My dad can start his garden a very good 2-3 weeks before we can, around the time you get started..he is in Lancaster Co., right near *Wing.
Anything we plant outside by seed does go out a bit earlier than the plants, it takes them some time to pop through the dirt...maybe about1-2 weeks, depends on the seed. Works well here..end of April the soil gets worked, plant the seeds..then around "mothers day", the plants go in..it is more of a safe bet at that time, although we have had to cover a few times.
We do "temper" the plants with the porch and cold frames/hot boxes. We usually don't have issue with critters eating plants, one year though the deer did wipe out the peppers, twice... but it was early enough for us to replace them. Our biggest issue is with the slugs...have been able to keep them at bay with some non-pesticide remedies...we have had them bad enough to go with the wicked stuff..sometimes you just have to.
