HELP! Ok I have two chicks that that I had to pip the shell for them yesterday, because they were shrink wrapped. They had been doing fine in the eggs, and I kept the humidity up so the membranes didn't dry out. Today I saw green in the egg, so I started to help them more. I think they both pooped in their shells, (never had that happen) so when they came out of the shell, I had to use a dropper to rinse them with warm water. Now here's where I need the help.... the one looks like it has a hernia, tumor or growth on its ambilical area....or is this the yolk, I've never seen it like this before? It is quite active..... HELP PLEASE!
Oh boy, that looks awful. Here is Sally's Hatching 101 article, close to the bottom she has a section called 'she's hatched, but what's with her butt?' Look there, also, maybe read her 'mushy chick' article, there's a link in the hatching 101 article. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

silkie..

that old english guy that I keep just for eye candy, picked a fight with the dominique rooster today, and I would say the little guy won.......see... size really does not matter...

my house is getting emptied of chicks and ducklings this weekend, my kitchen is housing the east indies, they will go to the grow out pen tomorrow, and my basement is housing 50 freedom rangers and the tsc ducklings, they will all go to the barn brooder this weekend, the meaties in the barn will go to the muscovy pen,,( i sectioned off a spot for them).....empty nest syndrome here, til the hedemora chicks come.
OEGB are known to be fighting birds...lol They will whoop any roo they come across.
I ended up with 1 bress/? and have 1 scovy in lockdown due Monday from your eggs.

Does anyone currently have turkeys for sale? Near Lebanon pa, or between Lebanon and Leesport. I am going to Leesport Saturday afternoon. Thanks
I have slate & mottled (slate/palm) hatching all summer. Already hatched 2 batches. I can put you on the list & ship when they hit a couple weeks old depending on how many you want if you can't find any local.

I am such a hoarder, why do I do that,,,,,you see... I am responsible for keeping machinery running at work, and I always bring spare parts and company trash home with me,, hey, I am sure I have a use for that....

I now have a trunk load of pretzel barrels....the only thing wrong with them is that the sticker machine was not working and they had to be opened and put in other barrels,,,,,,,the barrels are good and the lids are there but the seal has been broken on the lid........

what am I going to do with these,,,,,any one,,,,,I may just back up to the burn pile and throw them on there,,,,I can not figure why I thought I needed these.... ( yes I am that bad, I have not bought trash bags in a while either, I take the used big bags from work, they are the same size as a kitchen trash bag only clear )
Storage containers, feeders, waterers...wish I was closer!

I am incubating duck eggs right now. I pulled all the clear ones last night (day 7). Is there anything I can do with the clear eggs? It seems like throwing them away is a waste.
Boil or scramble & feed back to the birds for extra protien.

Quote: I never have any luck with these ones, but I really don't go out of my way to save them either. I try for strong birds & don't baby them. The weak cull themselves quickly around here.

Thanks, I am concerned that there was infection due to the thick green nasty that was all over the chick..... not wanting to spread disease. Torn on what to do.

looks like the yolk sac, if so, it should be absorded with in the first 24 hours....pm Sally and see what she thinks, she hatches weekly, so does silkie sensation..

LOL, I was going to reply:

My experience is that some chicks will overcome great odds and live, others will not. I am still learning to accept that, it doesn't always go the way I like.

Well it didn't make it.....I went to check it and the sack was turning green, so I started to pick up the chick and all of the sudden a river of bright green ooze came running out of the chicks umbilical area. I was freaked out and worried about disease, so I had to put it down. If you scroll to the sponsors at the end of the page, it was as green as the Nutrene sign. GROSS!

Sticking to my suggestions via pm

The orange ball type you cant do anything for it, you can try verterycin on it or iodine or antibiotic ointment NO PAIN RELIEF in it, this will help to keep it clean and then keep the chick alone, some make it some do bit, give it some feed sprinkled on the floor, electrolytes in the water are good, start feeding. recipes/suggestions in hatching 101 towards bottom for electrolytes. keep other chicks away from it. Watch for first poops and see if they are green and normal. Time will tell, sometimes they turn black and shrivel and fall off, sometimes they just dont make it.
