From what I understand, there is something in the seed shells also....if you look under the bird feeder where you put your sunflower seeds, there will be a bare spot.....

Hmmmm, those are in an old flower bed, but when they got established, the weeds did seem to be less. May be something to that.

I do have some on the edge of my garden, but still have weeds.

I do know the butterflies and bees like them. And my milkweed patches. I have seen a few monarchs at the milkweed, the real reason I let some grow.

Finally made it over to CC's last night, let the new adventure begin.
Hubby got his rabbits from CC, I think he said they are Californian rabbits...bigger than I thought they would be,,,, I know very little about rabbits, and it has been many years since hubby had them as a kid...
The pigs will come in the fall, so I would say that by next spring, I should be set really good for meat..
If only I had time for a large garden and to can the stuff, I would need very little from the grocery...

On a side note, a city friend of mine always say's that she will just come to live with me if the big SHTF adventure ever hits,,,,,,silly girl needs to remember that human would be a protein source also.... just kidding, that one is even beyond me.

Off to see what rabbits can eat, do they eat bugs like mealworms, or are they mostly vegetable eaters.

I wonder if its tooo late to plant milkweed seeds?

I ordered some a while ago and never planted them in the spring.

should I plant them now or wait till next spring?

who knows maybe I will do both........half now and half later just to see!

I really want to help the monarchs.............but I gotta remember this stuff!

NO clue on the seed planting of milkweed.

I have several plants that have taken over a corner of my chicken tractor field. I've tried transplanting them with no luck. Anyone have any tips on how to do that?

Vegetarian. They will do fine on just pellets and hay. Some people do pit them in cages on the ground so they can eat grass and stuff, but you need to watch for worms.

Relatively delicate digestive system.

wow, good info. I was ignorant to all of that. Thank you for sharing. Of course I have these sunflowers IN the garden, but I was/am planning on harvesting the heads before the seeds drop. I hope this will prevent any negative-altering of the veggies.

...My body can't handle animal meat, wouldn't even want to guess what THAT would do!!
Your friend would be way better off with you and all the knowledge you have to keep things going!
I have often thought...**what if we made small communities where we did mostly all our own...shared in responsibilities..animal keeping/gardening and so on. We could even trade for services. We would already be established if/when it all comes around..Just saying.....i think about things way too much anyway.

Hello everyone. The new coop is finally finished. Not sure if the girls like it, though. They complain to me constantly. I refused them access to the small coop because I want them to get used to the new one. Here are some pictures.

The finished product in place.

The nesting boxes with a poop board to the right. Bunty is the only one who uses the poop board area. I added a nesting ladder as you could see at the bottom right because the others do not want to roost on the higher area. If anyone has suggestions on improving this area, please share.

The only one missing is my orpington, Bunty. She was camera shy.
