Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Went to close the birds up tonight a little after dark and the 5 keets my broody has were no where. I was so scared, looking in all of the bushes. I started making kissy sounds like there were treats so maybe they'd come to me. They started peeping and one started making noises I've never heard before. It seriously sounded like it was getting attacked. I couldn't figure out for the life of me where the noise was coming from. Then the noise was coming from above me? I looked up, and

They're 3 weeks old and the roof on the new coop is 11 feet high. I was so relieved they were up there.
Glad you found them! Love the little silhouettes.

Some of our hens also get this type of feather damage from the rooster. Sometimes other flock members will pick at the damaged area also. I place saddles on to provide protection for their backs and will spray any exposed areas with blu-kot to reduce the amount of attention from the other birds.
Your saddle should help immensely!
I've got a couple of chicken saddles to make before the weather gets cold! I hadn't thought of blu-kot, I didn't know it was good to use as a deterrent, I thought it was just to use on wounds (I'm still learning!).

Does anyone have any interest in a kitten? Probably 4 Months old or so? I caught him dosing traffic at a shopping center (got bit pretty good too since he was so scared). I tried to take him to the humane society and they aren't accepting any cats. The local animal rescue is full too. He's very sweet and LOVES human attention but is very jumpy. I tried to bring him in and he just came to life seeing our cat but Monro was NOT happy and did nothing but hiss and growl at him. So the poor thing is stuck in a crate in the garage

if anyone wants him, please let me know. Until then, I guess I'll just keep trying to introduce those two and get them to get along lol
I'd love to take him off your hands, but DH would lose what little sanity he has left (I'm slowly turning our house into some sort of ark, he is convinced). Have you looked into local rescue groups? We have a few here that will take cats/kittens in return for donations of food/litter. I had Luccia (our older cat) for about 2 years before bringing home Evinrude, and there was a lot of growling and spitting. It lasted about a week, and then it was all fine. Unholy noises during the week, though! Good luck with finding a solution, and thank you for being a responsible and kind person for helping the kitten!

Thank you for rescuing him, Auroradream26...too many folks just wouldn't take the time. People like you make me happy!

I can't take the little fellow...i have 6 rescues already so my place is full. hopefully the introductions will go well but as a precaution I would re contact the humane society and ask them if they can provide testing for feline leukemia and feline HIV before exposing your own cat to him.

Thanks guys :) I can't help but try to rescue anything I find lol. I just worry for them too much and can't leave them behind. @PlaidBattleAxe the local rescue is mending hearts animal rescue. I used to volunteer there before we moved and still stop in here and there to visit and help out if I can. They always have such a long waiting list for cats waiting to come in. It's so sad :( @fisherlady you know, I've never actually had our cat tested for any of that stuff. Never even thought about it. He was a rescue too. My husband ended up running him over (straddled) while he was test driving a car at work. He went back and got him. He was so small that he fit in the palm of my hand and couldn't even eat solid food yet. Now he's 7 years old and a huge 20 lb cat lol. We names him Monro after the garage my husband was working at lol.

Not chicken related..

I have a family dinner to do this Sunday and would like some fresh homemade bread to go along with dinner....anyone have a tried and true recipe, something I can mostly do the night before and let rise over night........bread has been a failure in the past, so simple is a must...

As for the kitten, I think you are to far away. We are looking for a few barn cats, they would be strictly outside cats with shelter being the barn and fed daily...need to get the mice under control....we never had these problems till father in law got rid of all the cats....( fil, is no longer at the farm)

I've been using this for a few months and making all of our own bread. BUT if you use whole wheat flour, only use about 2 1/2 cups instead of 3.

as for the kitten, yeah, I think you're a good 4 hours from us. I don't think he'd make a good farm cat anyway as he's terrified of his own shadow and would probably have a heart attack :(

Thanks PlaidBattleAxe. Aurora, Good job rescuing the kitten. Wing, post on CL. Pretty much every farmer around me has so many cats they're begging people to take them. Make sure you get them fixed, they multiply crazily.

Our local spay/neuter feral rehab clinic has some barn cats listed, I think. It is in Lycoming County, so a bit of a drive, but if you are going to host the get together, I could maybe bring one or two down. Want me to ask?

Question for the Western PA folks... If we were to be relocated for my husband's job (possible promotion opportunity) to the south of Pittsburgh (we are currently NW of Pittsburgh and an hour and a half from the potential new location), specifically Shire Oaks, where should I focus my search for rental houses, in/near the country, that allow chickens? Oh, and a good school district is a plus! I'm at a loss and don't know the area down there at all. I found a little place in Buena Vista, but it doesn't look like the ordinances in that area allow for chickens (they are excluded as 'domestic pets' and 'agriculture' requires a min 10 acre lot). Being so close to Pittsburgh where my friends are allowed chickens in the city, it baffles me that they could be not allowed in more rural locations!

To add my two cents...don't get the aresol type if you can avoid it....there is always some over spray and it ends up on you/ the floor, the wallls etc....(yep, I have the tea-shirt)

Very true on it being a messy product to work with. I have spent many a day with blue fingers and now have numerous blue stained T-shirts myself!

Okay So I will wear gloves and old T-shirt and try not to get the aresol type.
