Got a little over half of the wiring done in the cabin before running out of wire. The rest will have to wait for money. Water & woodstove both still are not hooked up. Need parts for both. Oh, it's not that we don't have water at all. It's just that the pressure tank & pipes are all still outside exposed to the cold. All I need to move the stupid thing is an elbow. I really hate not having a vehicle & having to wait for people to take me to get what I need. The woodstove only needs 2 things...the collar that closes the gap between pipe & wall thimble & a support strap to keep it from tipping. I'll probably have to order both online like I did the thimble because everyone around here only carries 3 inch pipe accessories meant for pellet stoves. No one has anything for 8 inch.

We've had some interest from hunters to go for foxes and coyotes at night with lights. We had only one "maybe" coyote sighting, but a lot of foxes. I hope the hunters and trappers get 'em all.

I was thinking about getting some of those Dog-Proof coon traps to see if the coons are still around. We haven't seen any since one got in a box trap last summer, but maybe they are just not bothering to try to get into the pens and only eating free ranging birds we don't notice as being gone. Are coons active in cold weather? Are their pelts valuable now?

I'd have to check the game commission page, but most furbearers are active in the winter, coon, fox, possum, muskrat, mink, etc. The season for them is in winter and their pelts are more valuable then as they have thicker fur.

Of course you need a license to harvest them.

The snow storm that didn't happen has made my little lady one unhappy girl (except for this pic, it was her 5th birthday last week). She has even taken to bad mouthing Tom Clark (he knows nothing and fibs and Santa will not be stopping at his house!) Out of the mouth of babes!

I'm going to start trying the hot pepper seeds today. Our egg count has been terrible. I'm thinking we may be at a spot where our old girls are stopping and the new ones haven't started but not sure. I actually had to buy eggs at the store.

As far as the coyotes, they are very brazen. We've had one on the porch. I won't let my daughter go out with me to feed right now and the dog is escorted at night when he goes out. I'm calling my nephew and his buddies and going to organize a hunt.
so cute!! I can believe she was disappointed..nothing worse for a kid who is looking forward to a "snow day" and not getting it!!...i think we have all been there

Wow, your not kidding the coyotes are brazen..they generally don't like to be around people...maybe the "natural" pickens are slim?...I hope they are able to get a hunting group together and relieve you of these bold-"extras"...again, be safe out there!
Let me know how you make out with the hot pepper seeds please..this our third day of it..fingers are crossed, trying to stay hopeful...we have had to purchase store eggs...i do not want to have to repeat that experience...it feels so un-natural now..hahahaha...

wow, talk about from the ground up!! I hope you are able to get that heat hooked up soon!! Hope you at least have some hero-heaters or something...BRRrrrr

yep, that's why they do their trappin' this time of year....

A pretty Cubalaya rooster and hen.
Gorgeous as always. Dog have have any pics of the Silvers?
I ordered a 4 pack. Good thing I was quick about it, they sold out the 100 they had at that price in less than 20 minutes.
Glad you picked it up in time!
The note: it has the date i started the concoction, when to stir it , & when it should be "done"..it is looking very good, I have to stir it today. There are nice sized "things" in there:thumbsup ...& it smells really good, but then i guess you have to enjoy that perticular smell to begin with..haha we have to manually lock everything up & turn on a "motion" light right @ the coop. The other night the large barn motion sensor light popped on, there was a HUGE possum walking around the run area...i think it was more interested in the pumpkin bits still in the run..it meandered around the garden and then left the yard completely..didn't enjoy the spot lights!
Possums are so sneaky looking, aren't they? I know they have their purpose, but I'd rather not run into them...
This is the third day of hot pepper seeds..they are eating like mad-birds..but still no eggs...i am a very patient person ..sometimes..they will have the rest of the week for hot seeds..then I will have to start squeezing them!!;) Hope everyone made out okay with the "snow storm"...we are very fortunate, didn't get a thing here in central PA.
I hear ya, another one of my girls decided to start molting now. So, out of 8 birds I am getting about 2 eggs every other day.

How many birds do you have free ranging?

I'm going to have to buy store eggs too soon. :(. Maybe Wing will have enough to sell me a dozen when I see her.

Silkie:

You are a trooper....hope you can get your parts lined up....its down right chilly out there...

Good evening all:

Question for the learned.....ever have a hen grow spurs? I have a dork/CCL mix that is about 8mos old and I just noticed she is growing spurs....she's not a productive layer, but, she has laid and been covered by #2roo....so what's up?

Yep, 2 little heaters running, but still chilly since there's also no insulation yet. We tend to run around in hoodies & each have about 6 layers of blankets on our beds, but we won't freeze. It's actually warmer in the cabin than it was a few nights in the rv. My son's dog kept laying against the heater & making it shut off in the middle of the night. I literally woke up to a 1/4-1/2 inch layer of ice in the turtle tank 3 times over there. Now his dog is his problem. It's not allowed in my cabin & he & his gf are staying in the rv.

Just waiting on money to order what I need.

Some hens grow spurs. Some breeds it is standard, others it just pops up on occasion.

It's the same price as the normal hunting tag, if I remember correctly. Many can be hunted with either the furbearer tag or the normal hunting tag too. :)
