Just a question for you all about Roos. When someone says a Roo drawss blood, does that mean he is pecking at you ir using his Spurs? Or both? Just curious, since the only Roo I have had at maturity is a wimpy Silkie.

It's possible to get spurred and it can really hurt if they jump you from behind and get your leg, but their beaks are usually the preferred weapon when attacking humans. I've had them bite, clamp down, then twist for maximum damage. Often they do that when you are holding them and their head is not controlled. If a rooster attacks me, I've found holding them by the neck (only) prevents any further biting, LOL. Seriously though, my goal when a rooster starts getting mean is to humiliate him in front of his hens. I will grab him by the neck and push his head to the ground and hold him there, pinned under one hand, for a bit. I want him to understand the raw power of a single human arm so he fears that coming toward him in the future, because he certainly doesn't want to be pinned again, that is the most vulnerable position a roo can be in. Have you ever seen the loser of a fight between 2 roosters? The loser will run and hide his head as a sign of submission, that is about the only thing that will make the victor stop attacking him.

We've found several dead roosters around the farm as of late. I think it's time to thin the herd, or they will do it for us, leaving the meanest ones behind. Anyone want a pretty roo, or 5?

Here in Southeastern PA, between Carversville and Point Pleasant!

Welcome neighbor! I'm just in Warminster.

One thing I have learned from having chickens is that you never pay for a Rooster. Someone always is looking to re home. Sorry I can't help you out here.

Update - husband is home. No blockages so there is no cause for the congestive heart failure that we know yet. So he needs to loose a lot of weight and be on a low sodium diet.

And Niko is still broody.
. So good to hear!. Hope he does well with the diet.

Heading back home after a weekend in southern Maryland visiting family and fishing. Rockfish are a blast to catch!....

Great pic! That fish is HUGE.

OMG!!! Gorgeous!!! Any way you would swap a few of their eggs? I love lavender birds

We are bursting at the seams as it is. We can sell and send eggs, but we have no room for more than what we already have. We already have 15 broodies with chicks and 11 more broodies on eggs. I think that's about enough for now.

Thought of you this weekend at the Bloomsburg Show, there were some gorgeous birds with long LONG tail feathers.

Im just torn seeing these eggs, I think the 2 big roosters I have are crushing the girls while mating and causing the eggs to break before there laid, what do you think??

In my experience, it was by pecking. A good education on the power of a peck though. I think he'd have drawn blood with his spurs if he'd ever gotten the chance, but we were on guard everytime he flogged or attacked.

Can you pm me prices on the lav ams & any other heavy egg layers you have that are friendly?

I don't have time to search right now through more threads. I am so frustrated. Looking for sand without silica. I was told somewhere contractors sand. All say "may contain silica". The play sand packaging cannot be read, the lettering is so poorly printed. So I'm guessing not the QUICKRETE brand. What brand of sand do you use and where can I find it? I've been to Home Depot & Lowes.

Masonary sand is cheap & works quite well. Just look up sand & gravel pits or quarries in your area. You can usually get a whole ton under $10 or a couple bucket fulls for under a dollar. Masonary sand has a mix of sizes in the sand but none or it is real huge. It makes excellent grit for the birds too.

10 miles east of Ohio next to Sharon Pa

I'm 45 minutes west of Wheeling, so not far from you. Howdy neighbor!

Well, I made the decision to re-home my junior roo....what a difference in the girls....everybody is relaxed....going to miss the guy, he's a good boy, just needs more room and a bigger flock....which he is getting...
