Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Today I decided to kick my CX chicks out of the coop for the day. I was tired of them just sitting by the food dish and pooping everywhere and I thought it would be good for them. To say that they had a good time would be total understatement. They had SO much fun today! I had to take pictures of them. The definitely got their exercise today! I THINK they're about 5-6 weeks old now. I cant remember lol.

With one of my rhodebar hens

One of the cochin chicks they hang out with. I think she's about 9-10 weeks old now

Cochin, RIR (11-12 weeks old?), CX

And I did manage to get a couple pictures of Ana an her babies :) I'm starting to wonder if she's ever going to take them outside.

Coop question for my fellow Pennsylvanians,

Our Silkies are now 6 weeks old. They've been out for 2 weeks now, on grass - which is now naturally muddy due to rain, chicken tracks and poop. I'm considering putting down sand, but I'm not 100% on it yet. The ground under their coop where they started is pretty destroyed, so I definitely want to put a layer of something down. They're coop extension area was just added, so it's still got a decent amount of grass yet, but I'm sure I'll have to cover it soon enough.

Sand, yay or nay?

I asked this a bit back and the two answers were sand and pebbles.....Fisher uses pebbles (she has lots of pics to view) and somebody else went with sand....I may do a 1/2 and 1/2 and see what I like better.....if you use pebbles you need a separate area for dusting .....my two cents

Coop question for my fellow Pennsylvanians,

We just started with 9 Silkies who are now 6 weeks old. They've been out for 2 weeks now, on grass - which is now fairly muddy due to rain, chicken tracks and poop. They're coop extension area was just added a few days ago, so it's still got a decent amount of grass yet, but I'm sure I'll have to cover it soon enough.

If the ground tends to be wet then sand won't help much, it will soon be so mixed with dirt and poo that it will not be much better than what you have now.
I agree with stake that going with a mix would be a better option, or even plain gravel (a fine crushed size just a bit bigger than pea sized, not big stuff), place boards around the perimeter to keep it in. Then set up a dusting zone with a small kiddie pool or a tire cut in half around the circumference and laid flat with a plastic sheet in the bottom, then add a mix of sand and wood ashes or peat moss.

So I ended up with 10 chicks from the incubation of our Easter Eggers eggs. I lost one that was cemented in the shell. She was not positioned quite right and broke the yolk early on while pipping. After 24 hours and little progress I helped her out, but she died 2 days later. She was just too weak.

We are in suburbia, so no rooster here, but bought 3 laying hens from a farm. We didn't see a naked neck roo, but they must have had one, lol. 7 out of the 10 chicks are naked necks.

Almost 1 1/2 weeks old. Anyone want to venture any guesses on how many girls we might have?

#1 is in previous post, 2 of the non naked necks are getting a muff like their mothers already. :) so cute!! We can't keep them all in our suburban back yard. I need a small farm near Harrisburg. Anyone know of any, let me know so we can keep all these babies, ;-)
Best guesses on sex of these about 1 1/2 week olds?

I'm sorry Stake, but I really did 'LOL' when I read this post... Did they make you dance? Bugs all over me would be fodder for nightmares for months to come.

Sorry to say, I agree with the majority here, look like 2 cockerels to me.

Chesco? me too!!

I think my friend attended this a year or 2 ago. LOVE peeking at other peoples coops.

Hmm a viable option...

Good point!

Cover it with a roof. You'll be glad you did.

My coop?

Thanks all for the input!
