Apologies for the picture, please let me know if it's a faux pas on these forums to post pictures like this. Is there any way to tell if it was a fox or a hawk from the picture?

The mood in the house has changed from happy egg collectors to mourning. All the other chickens are locked in the run now.
So sorry. Lost my first to a hawk a few weeks ago. Looked the same sad.png
Recently something actually broke my gate latch, shearing off the screw heads but the coop was not breeched, thank goodness

Hi @AnneInTheBurbs, yes this is our first loss. They're so happy when they're out exploring, it's a shame we have to lock them up now.

Breaking a gate latch is scary. Wish we could camera all our properties so we can identify.

My 2 year old didn't understand when we told him. Our 4 year old said "Are we going to get another Chuck cos Chuck is dead?"

Still a lot of noise from the chicken run from the friends Chuck left behind. Hope they get over it soon.

Sorry about your hen. I hate to lose a bird, but it's much worse when it's a child's pet. I found a Cooper's hawk in the run with my Cream Legbars a while back. Or rather I found the body of a Cooper's hawk. I don't know how it got into that tightly covered run, but the 6 Legbar roos in there were not about to let it hurt one of the pullets, or at least I assume how that went down, they are very protective and while light weights, they are ounce-for-ounce the most aggressive of all my breeds. Only guineas can do better at putting the hurt on a predator, and a pack of roos are obviously a force to be reckoned with in an enclosed space like that.

@kie4, Sounds like you will need to raise another batch of chicks soon! I will have chicks starting next month. Just sayin' . . .

Raising lots of fun poultry: Cream Legbars, Welbars, Bielefelders, California Greys, and 6 colors / sizes of Ameraucanas

Also Turkeys, Guineas and Peafowl

I have eggs and chicks available for sale from some of these breeds, details at my website

True! The picket fence is only 4 ft so anything could have jumped it. What the heck is big enough to break screws and leave the fence standing? Having these chickens is like having my heart running around outside and hoping it's not broken in the morning. So hard to lose these girls.

Hi @dheltzel, thanks for the kind message. Alex said "Cos Chuck's dead can we get another Chuck?" It's funny how 4 year old kids can accept things so quickly. If you have any white chickens then please let me know, I'll come over and let Alex pick up a new Chuck :-) (Maybe not call he "Chuck" this time haha!)

Dog bowl is excellent by the way, it's keeping the water liquid. Good tip!

No white chickens at all (I'm not a fan of white, seems rather plain looking to me). It would not be easy to add a new hen to your flock anyway, It would be better to raise some chicks and introduce them when partially grown.

Wow, that's amazing that they took down a hawk! I know Cooper's hawks aren't huge but still.

What's with them flying in to runs anyway? That one that trapped himself in my run was a Cooper's hawk too!

speaking of frozen water dishes, I read a tip in a different thread where someone would use a bucket (I think 5 gallon) and would bury it up to near the rim and it would keep from freezing. I haven't tried it but that was something interesting that I read. I may try it in the future just to see how it works.

And they have a symptom checker for sick birds (link for ducks on the bottom of the page)
