I've got a question... anyone have Easter Eggers or Wyandottes that they breed? I am curious as to when they start laying. I just assume about 6 months....for any heritage breed. But then it occurred to me, my Marans and Orpingtons take at least that long, but perhaps other breeds are quicker to come to the nest box.

Also... I picked up a bit of sunshine from our Sally today!!

LOVE this post!! A true chicken person, I see. Next you'll be picking up turkeys, geese and goats. LOL

I don't recognize the breeds. But they sure are sweet looking!

We went to the guy Saturday to get one Muscovy and left with a Muscovy and one "Banty" hen as he called her and went back the next day for two more Muscovies and another hen and left with those plus another hen and rooster lol. The rooster is the funniest chicken ever. Hopefully we can get him and our other guy to get along.

Well, as the sap flows, we managed to collect about 12 gallons in the past 24 hours! We have enough to make a bit over a quart of syrup lol. We're going to be swamped with the stuff by Friday when we start cooking it down. We may actually run out of buckets before then lol.

I am so very happy for you! It's really cool to be able to do that!

Awe! Congrats! I think all of my EE were laying around 24 weeks. Hatchery birds by 16 (Penny on the day!).

yoopergirl, are your new chickens bantams? They look like a a barnyard mix. The roosters appear be at least half frizzled Cochin, the pullet some Mottled Cochin; but the legs should have feathers.

I got the first duck egg of the year! I've been looking, but thought today would be the day. I forgot that the Muscovy lays in the nest box.
Since the three drakes were dropped off, I have not had duck eggs. The drakes leave in four weeks.

The person we got them from just called them banty hens? He got them from two different hatcheries but that's about all I know. I hadn't planned on getting them and haven't really done any research on bantams and wasn't sure where to start. They are super sweet and the rooster is very funny. Glad I got them but should probably find out more about them. Thanks for giving me somewhere to start!

I picked up OEs, Crele Orpingtons and Icelandics, 15 in all! They are pretty sweet. Thanks for the info on the Wyandottes, I've got some Silver Laced that were hatched early November.

anyone else lose power? when the wind woke me, I hopped up and showered just in case... then we lost power. I wish I'd filled the bath. What does everyone else do to prepare for loss of power?

I was lucky to not lose power. My tub is full. Not in preparation for the power going out though.

The yard is soaked. The water from the house has no where to drain thanks to the constant rain and show. When we have a warm day that the snow isn't melting, my water will go down. Then we get more rain that turns to snow that melts as it rains again. LOL! I was told I was wrong. That I needed a guy to come deal with my septic tank or a plumber for the house. Well, I finally had enough of my tub not draining. I was trying to load myself up with numbers to call (I have problems with getting electricians and plumbers here) and found an article from a septic guy. woo hoo!
