Happy Fasnacht day to my fellow PA dutchers

Yum, my grandma used to make these every Fasnacht day. She coated hers in cinnamon and sugar. I wonder if anyone in my family has the recipe...
Hello from Berks County!!

Welcome! What kind of birds do you have?

Has anyone ever installed a fan in their coop? With this warm weather, I am concerned about ventilation and hot temperatures. I was going to mount it so that it pulls air out of the coop. I was also considering removing panels of the siding, to be saved and replaced come next winter. Hardware cloth would be used to keep out predators.

I actually don't have any birds yet, my boyfriend and I are working on the coop and run at the moment. I have decided on what chicks I'll be getting though. I'll be doing SLWs and possibly some goldens if I feel up for having two different colors lol.

Here are my boys Ford and Stetson! Both are up and crying for apples and raisins today! Little guy is super friendly now. Big Stetson still won't let me touch him unless I have a treat but at least he's standing. I've been out by them for a couple hours and no coughing. Found someone to come out and check them out.

I have 12 Wyandotte chicks right now. Love them! I have silver, blue, gold, black/red, and one splash. They definitely make a pretty little flock!

That's awesome! I've been considering whether or not I want to have a big old mix of them or just stick to one color pattern for now. I'm also wondering how one gets into showing chickens so that's also why I'm thinking if I want to stick to one color or not. Once I saw a few videos of them strutting their stuff and found out how winter resistant they are I fell in love.

I'm also debating whether I want to wait around for the Blue Laced Red to come in or not.... Oley Feed Mill isn't going to get those particular birds in until after May.

Keith (My boyfriend) said that'll give us plenty of time to get the coop built but I think I've caught chicken fever!

The more I read the more I learn your better off getting show birds from smaller farms that breed them for show or even finding someone on here and getting them that way. I'm still new to this and I got mine from Meyers and while healthy and wonderful they don't breed them for the qualities you'd want for showing standard they go for quantity. Unless they change after the first moult I only have 5 that have completed lacing and still waiting to see body shape. There are lots of people on here to ask and I could be wrong but I know the next batch I get will probably be eggs from a breeder trying to better their line of BLR. Still have to figure out incubation but I'm positive my addiction will take me there soon lol.
Not sure what's worse chicken fever or duck brain. I'm afflicted with a big dose of each!

That's what I was thinking, the more videos I see of these show birds the more I'm just like "Ohhhhh my god yeah let's wait a while before we do that!" I'll see what I get out of my order and once I need more I'll be breeding and hatching my own so maybe I'll get a few good birds, who knows?

I'm a huge fan of the SLW so I might wind up going just with them but idk. Ugh I hate not having my mind made up!

At least I'm only having issues with color patterns and not two different breeds lol. My mom and I are gonna be heading out to our feed mill to take a look and see what they have for chick equipment this afternoon. (We still need a brooder box and heat lamps, etc. I think we might have the right lamps but I know we'll need the bulbs). Well, and some help with the order form. They have a store special for getting started but I'm not entirely sure if you can do multiple specials since I wanted more than 10 chicks.

Thought I'd post an egg pic for fun, too. :)

Starting with the green eggs and going clockwise, the green ones are from my EE, the white ones are Polish, the two darker brown ones are from my hatchery Black Copper Marans, the next two are from the hatchery Blue Copper Marans (hard to see in this pic, but they always have nice dark speckles that distinguish them from regular brown eggs), the two little browns I believe are from my Buff Orp pullet that just started laying, and the two pinky brown torpedoes at the top are from either the Barred Rock or BLRW. My Ameraucana isn't represented here--her eggs are much bluer than the EE's, but she laid a few eggs earlier this month and then decided to go back on sabbatical.

The Marans eggs started out a bit darker last month, but they're the ones who have been laying the most consistently, so the color has already gotten a bit lighter than it was.

Anyway, I love color variety in eggs, and I'm looking forward to adding more! :)

They're gorgeous! I think the two lighter brown ones would be from a Barred Rock. My Barred Rock (RIP Hennifer Lopez!) laid a lighter brown egg that had more of a torpedo shape sometimes. Here is a picture of her first egg. Yes, she laid it in a basket by the back door.
