I've had some mechanical issues with the incubator and needed to bring in DH for a consult, now that he is wise to the fact that I've got a cabinet incubator in the house...he's made it clear that one hatch....then it goes back to it's home at MsLadyHawks. I wonder if I could squeeze those call duck eggs in before he notices...

I really should order them....just in case.

Hey guys just got home and Hedwig is acting kinda Funny. She was doing it last night too. I wasn't home all day so I'm not sure if it happened all day. Anyone mind watching and let me know what you think?

I agree. I think she is just too hot. Remember a chickens body temp is about 103-105, I believe, and she was used to temperatures around freezing. Maybe if you have someplace a bit cooler for her, maybe a garage or something? If not, just make sure she has fresh cold water available at all times.

@yoopergirl1211
, that may feel a little warm if she is acclimated to being outside all winter, but I can't imagine it would do her any harm.  She looks ok to me, but I'd defer to the pros around here if there are still any awake. :)

X2!

Haha, oh you're in this far already....

I feel like I should get a gold star. I walked into tractor supply yesterday, and did not come out with any chicks! That's the second time.

@dheltzel. I candled Cinnamons eggs last night. Looks like at least two of the Lav eggs are developing, but you were right. The Bielefelder eggs, as best I can tell, are looking so good. I stuck them all back under her anyways, just to be sure. Do you think the large Roos are having a hard time mounting the girls because of their size?

That broody has turned into a nasty girl, she used to just growl, but when I reached for those eggs, she kept biting me. Little booger. So that will be the last time I candle those eggs, I think. About 9-10 days left...

Now that is cute. I am always amazed by Mindy. I wonder if these chicks, raised by a broody, will have a greater tendency to go broody? I've only ever had one Am go broody, and she was only into it for a week, then decided motherhood was not for her.

The other theory is that it is not nature or nurture, but something in the water at your place.

Thanks, Mindy still amazes us too...she is so careful to move slow around the babies and hens, she seems to understand how to not scare them.

I have to think that nurturing can reinforce nature... a few years ago I got some leghorn eggs (from a showline breeder) to hatch under a broody (hatch was late June). A friend wanted leghorns and my hen needed some eggs anyway. The broody hatched and raised 8, 4 were boys and 4 hens. One of the pullets was lost to a predator after going to their new home and early the following spring he sends me a picture of one of the hens pancaked on a nest! She successfully brooded her clutch of 4 and was a good mom to them.
Last year I got eggs from a friend, tractor supply Americauna hens under a TSC barred rock rooster. Hatched 12, 8 were roosters. We sold some but one pullet we kept ended up brooding and hatching when she was just over 7 months old.
I think there are genes still floating around in the birds, but environment can help prompt them to follow a whim.

And BTW... Brownie is a mutt EE type, she never brooded till she was older. She just turned 5 years old this month.

Tell them you are hatching them for a friend . . .
If they hatch, you can say they are "too cute" and you must keep them.

So now you understand first hand how a cabinet incubator can get out of control. The moment when it is completely filled (288 eggs) and you begin to contemplate a second one, that is the real danger point though. I think @Auroradream26
is at or near that point now.

Yes, I'm very near that point. I have to stop early this year but next year I'll be in desperate need a of a second one lol

Why are you stopping early? My best sales are right after "chick days" end at the feed stores. Once people realize the supply of local chicks has stopped, they really want whatever I can hatch.

We have a wedding to go to in Oregon this July so my last hatches will be in June. My BIL will be watching over our flock while we're gone so I need to make it as simple as possible for him. Everyone will be running together as one big flock and as few babies as possible if any. He doesn't know much about their care so I need to keep it as simple as possible.

Finally got confirmation email for my East Indie ducklings!! I have one male and 4 females coming. Kinda hoping I can maybe sell their babies eventually. They are sooooo pretty! Plus I can get practice with ducklings before all of my Muscovies get here!
And I'm having serious issues with pasty butt on my TS Silkie chicks. Going to put PJ on them today but I have a really small one that I'm not sure is going to make it. Would it kill those guys to check them once or twice or at least mention it. I was talking to a lady buying 12 of them that thought they could just get tossed in her new coop right away and be fine. I doubt she'd have checked their butts. I directed her to this site and explained chick care a bit. Really hoping the little one makes it.

I think it may be in the water. Hopefully I have something in my water too. Haha! It's working so far. 3 broodies since September when we got chickens back.

Glad you have confirmations on the ducks. Sorry to hear about the chicks, I have no experience with that, but I will try to look into it tonight in my books.
