The farmer I bought these from calls that pullet's color "sunburst". Technically, it is Crele, the same color as a Welbar. I hope they are autosexing, but plan to cross these into my Welbar and Legbar lines to see if I can get males that are worth something.Beautiful birds, love the hen in the background (buff)
This is totally non chicken related, but because it my first spring in my new house, I am discovering all the spring plants that are here. Does any one have these? Jack in the pulpit is their name. I have always loved them. And now we have quite a few here!

Curlys eye looks better today. Less swelling and she is not trying to close it. Just have been using Vetrx 2x a day. I will give it a couple more days, as she is showing no other symptoms. She is as active as ever.
Happy to have a new layer in the back yard! Bang on 33 weeks old our Crested Cream Legbar "Ohagi" laid her first blue egg last night.
20 Wyandottes! 10 SLW and 10 GLW, 18 ladies and 2 boys!
Gorgeous! I'll take one! Just kidding, the hubs is already gonna freak when he finds out I'm keeping one of the Bielefelder Roo and a Brabanter or two.. . He said he could hearing the Roo a 5 am this morning. Found out why shortly after. We had quite a storm last night and it blew the coops doors open! Thankfully no one was taken. The doors just did not latch right.
Cats can be a problem with babies around. Our little turkey chick got snatched a few weeks ago. I asked my neighbor to put a bell on the cats collar, so at least they can hear it coming and be aware of it. We do hear "Jingles" as we call him now. I suspect the girls hear him now also.Really!!!???, Finally, a neighbor! I'm in Shippensburg. I just now found your post:0) I'm thinking of free ranging some Orpington's. I want to see and enjoy my chickens running around the yard. Problem is I have a barn cat that loves to eat all my song birds and any babies that are on the ground. I'm not sure what she would do with a full grown chicken. Do you know of anywhere around here that sells adults? Our neighbor has a few chickens running around the neighborhood and the only thing that has attacked them is a pesky fox. I'd like to start out with just a few chickens, like a pair. Roo may be protective. I gave that cat to a lady over a year ago as an inside cat, but she didn't acclimate well and refused to use her litter box, so guess who's back as of March? I won't have a cat like that in the house so she is now a barn cat and an extremely good mouser. Problem is she doesn't stop there.
Wonderful! They do love the mulch don't they? We have a few acres and they still sneak around to the front yard and dig up my beds.My 3 ladies have been enjoying their supervised free range (still wary of avian pred's) time now that it's nice out. If only I could predator-proof our entire property, and chicken-proof some things (ahem, mulched flower beds!) because of course no matter how much nice green grass or wooded space we have, they just gravitate towards that mulch!Pepper taking a snoozeAnd today I bit the bullet and the chicks had a "field trip" and met beak to beak with my 3 girls.Hens seemed pretty skeptical, lots of bawking but then moved along to dig for worms and such.It was a short visit, but tomorrow I will put them out for longer, adjust food/water in the main area and hopefully get them into the coop for their first night. Hopefully all goes well
