Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I just moved eggs to lockdown and had a rotten one explode in my fingers, all over the tray and other eggs. :sick:sick:sick:sick

YUCK! :sick:sick

My EE hen that hatched my chicks at the end of May is broody already!! I don't want anymore chicks!! She is really hard to break. This is her third time broody and I've only had her a year!! Ugh!!

Good luck! In my experience, hens like that don't take no for an answer. My SPR Ana just let her babies go about 2 weeks ago. That's her second clutch this year. I already bet hubby that she'll be ready to brood again by the time we're home from vacation in a couple weeks lol. She won't give up if I don't give her anything either. Last time I tried that, she sat for 3 months till I gave in!

The first time it took a while for her to give up. This spring I think she had been sitting for about a month before I got home from FL and I gave her eggs. I also have a red sex link that went broody about the same time that the EE gave up her chocks. Ironically she is the meanest to the chicks. She will not get eggs!

Received another shipment from Sand Hill today, but still no Creme Brabanters (sorry @AnneInTheBurbs). Here is a list of what I got today:
American Dumpy (3)
Blue Andulusian (4)
BB Red Cubalaya (1)
Black Leghorn (1)
Sicilian Buttercup (5)
Exchequer Leghorn (2)
Golden Campine (5)
Golden Lakenvelder (3)
Mille Fleur Leghorn (7)
Silver Krainekoppe (3)
I wish I was better at id'ing chicks, I'd like to sell some of these, but I can't tell most of them apart.

No sweat! I know you don't have control over these things. Will you be raising most of these breeds for sale next year, or did you just get a variety pack?

That's nasty. Hope you got the smell off. I haven't had that problem yet, thankfully.

I just put my RIR into the broody breaker this morning. I am hoping to break all three girls before I go on vacation. The poor Silkie is so old, I'd almost like to give her chicks. But she's so teeny I hate to see her get thinner by sitting on the nest incessantly. Silly girl!

We enjoy raising them. They are a lot of work though. When they're really young, they're horribly messy in the brooder since they poop nonstop. Once they're outside though being raised in a tractor, they're not bad at all. We would move the tractor once a day and at 7-9 weeks old, they were eating 3 large bowls of FF a day and 3-4 gallons of water daily. The meat is very good IMO. Their size really depends on how long you let them go. Right now, the ones we're butchering are 9 weeks old. They fit in to a 1 gallon zip lock bag. Some are really tough to get in but they fit. They average 5 lbs dressed out, give or take. Normally, we would let them go a bit longer but we're going on vacation in less than 2 weeks so we need to get them done now. We had a few that we left go to about 16 weeks before butchering and they were 10-12 lbs dressed out. We like raising them and having them around. The only pain is the brooder stage and hauling food and water to them multiple times a day.

X2 on what Auroradream said about hers, for us I felt it was worth it and we raised ours on sand until old enough to be out in the movable tractor. Having the bones/necks/feet to be able to make broth is an added bonus. You can't beat the CX feet for broth...

Thank you so much for your input! I look forward to someday having a meat flock. I have to deal with my current flock first, with 3 mean roosters going to freezer camp, a broody girl with 4 eggs hatching soon, some sick chickens, and rental restrictions. Chicken math will come in handy

Funny story. So my little turkey babies are so bonded to me. Yesterday, I went down to my neighbors house to help them troubleshoot a computer problem. They live about a few houses down, which is maybe a 1/4 of a mile. It was near dusk, and the little babies followed me down the street. I thought for sure they would stop at some point and go back. But nope, they followed me the whole way. My neighbor thought it was the cutest thing ever and loved holding them.

After I came back outside, about 15 minutes later, we did not see or hear them. I started walking back home figuring they probably went back as well. My neighbor then called me and told me they were on the back porch. They saw me, and followed me right back home again. It was so funny!

You're mama turkey! That's really sweet :) I'm happy to hear how bonded they are to you! How old are they now?

My poults have arrived! I'll upload the pictures here in a bit. I ordered 15, they sent 17. 1 died on the way and 1 looks like it has a broken leg. I put on my order that I was hoping for something penciled and they were nice enough to include a penciled palm and a blue penciled palm for me and marked them :) I'm really excited! The rest are from a mixed pen of buff, black, chocolate, and BR. 2 look to be chocolate, 1 I'm not sure what it is but it looks blueish and has a pink/peorple mark on its head. The only ones that were supposed to be marked are the blue penciled palm and the penciled palm (which are marked). So I'll probably keep those 5. The rest look like palms, buffs, red bronze, and 1 little black.
