I put a few eggs in the incubator for Halloween. If you know chocolate eggs, you know it’s impossible to candle until they are moving. I saw one dancing last night, so I am feeling all warm and fuzzy about that.

I need to get more chickens that lay dark brown eggs.
I sold off all my dark egg layers. All I have left are cream, blue, green, and maybe one light brown
I set 8 dark, and... I think ten fridge quail eggs.

I can't free range anymore. so they aren't hiding eggs somewhere. One is 5, one is 4, two are 3 and 2 are 1.

We don't have to wait for Easter to do egg hunts. We do them everyday. Lol. The one problem of free ranging birds.
We have roof on the coop. I tried to paint it, but the spray paint gun was aweful for the job. It took me 6 hours to have that much done! 
Will never use paint gun again. In the positive side, we only need to put on the wall, windows, and doors and then the coop will be ready.

I got up a run for the chickens. On the way up to the house, I saw a few dead quail. The only thing I can think of is that the temperature keeps fluctuating. I’m planning on getting them into the big coop, so I should not lose anymore, but seriously, it’s crazy.

This is a frustrating time of year when dealing with vulnerable birds, the temperature swings are hard on them. We don't have quail but we do have some seniors who are having trouble with the effects of the cold. We had a problem cockerel who needed to go tonight and since we were taking care of him we decided to also cull 3 older hens who have had problems recently. We have a rather elderly population of hens (many 6-8 years old) and as much as I dislike doing it there will be a few more we need to take care of before the hard cold sets in due to their arthritis and other problems. We have delayed doing culling as long as the hens seemed happy and hearty, even when they quit laying, but eventually the time comes...
And when you are ready for a few birds you can let me know , I have a few pullets you would like and a couple nice cockerels also if needed!
