Often if a new or flighty broody is being disturbed too much by other flock members they will give up. Their 'stick to it' attitude does seem to get better if they sit more times.
She also may have given up because the eggs were frozen or near frozen from being unprotected over cold nights early on. Gathering a clutch in warmer weather isnt too risky for a hen, but doing so in freezing weather is rarely successful because the early eggs are frozen before enough are gathered for her to decide to park. This us the reason people gather hatching eggs in a safe spot, mark them and then swap them out all at once for the eggs the broody has gathered in cold weather.
To prevent another issue with staggered hatches or a nest you cant reach you should block off access to that spot with chicken wire or hardware cloth.

:goodpost:Thanks @fisherlady How long should I wait to be sure before clearing the nest? I first noticed them hiding eggs around Dec 16. 3 hens were building the nest, each would be in there about 2 hours at a shot, then the next would take a turn. I can’t see how many eggs are in the nest, maybe 8 I think.
