Lol Not the same thing. That is funny that they have an animal product and a human one that does basically the same thing and with the same name!

I think this is going to be a lot of fun!  It's like showing horses, really!  I used to black their hooves and rub oil on after I saddled them up and spray them down with a bit of gliz on their mane and tail to shine (it wasn't sparkle-- just shine)  Although, this is on a much smaller scale and so far-- a lot cheaper!  ha!!

Sorry I'm slow in replying. Spring Break is never a "break" for us IT people. Thanks everyone for the comments on my little building project. I need to remember & take a picture with someone standing next to it so you have an idea of scale. Coop is basically 6'x8'x7'. Anxious for the rain the STOP so I can get back to work on my backyard barn. Will post updated pics once I get a little further along.

Look for "deck" blocks. They are like $6.50 ea at Home Depot. I've used them on a number decks that I've built over the years. Much easier, cheaper & faster than pouring a footing. They are also "notched" on the top for standard 2x lumber or a 4x post. I think I've seen them at Lowe's too at one time.

Thanks Hawk. Didn't have any extra hands; did it all by myself. Probably why my back was killing me Friday night. Pressure treated 2x6's are pretty heavy to lug around. My neighbor said he'd come over & help put up the siding if I needed the help. I need to take a look at your nest boxes to see how you made them. I've been fiddling with some design ideas, but haven't settled on anything yet.

Thank you WichitaKidd, I will have to go look at Lowe's tomorrow. I've only been there 3 times this month, lol! They sure do look a lot easier than what I had in mind.

Candace, if you're out there, I really hope you're doing better. What a scary thing to have happen!

Nana, congratulations on your beautiful new baby granddaughter!

Hawkeye, love the pics, what a beautiful bird :)

I got 35 chicks in today, that's a total of 42 chicks now @.@ and 3 ducklings. I still have 2 more chicks coming in about a week and a hen that is sitting on a nest. Glad I have room! Now if the fence company would just hurry up and get back to me! Even though they won't be big enough to go out on the acreage for several more weeks, I will feel better once that fence is up and I know everything is set and ready.

Nana congrats on your new grand bundle of joy!

Hawkeye good luck on your show.  Now I know why I don't want to show. That is just too much work!

Candace if you are out there please get well soon. That is so dangerous. I was diagnosed with a lung blood clot once and they wouldn't let me move at all. But once in the hospital they discovered I had pneumonia again and it was just so congested they couldn't hear the congestion sounds.

I have a ton of chicks in my incubator and there's more hatching. I need to move some of them out soon. The barnyard nests were very productive!

I spent my afternoon and evening in the ER with my Mom yesterday. I went to the rest home to visit her and it was apparent she was in tremendous pain. She doesn't complain so no one had paid attention to her. She told me about an aide that made her get out of the bathroom and called her crazy because she was in pain. Then pushed her out in the hall and left her. I am so mad I could spit. I was told to fill out a form but that isn't good enough. I am going to find the director of nursing and make sure that be-atch is fired. My Mom doesn't lie nor make up stories. Even in her diminished capacity it takes a while to get what she is saying out, but she is still of sound mind and doesn't imagine things. They did fortunately find the problem and treat it after several hours. I am hoping after some rest today she will be much better. Her colon is wrapped around her stomach and caused a blockage. Normally they could do surgery to correct it but she is too weak for that. Once they got her cleaned out they are prescribing some meds to help her. I am still just ready to blow each time I think about that gal.  She has no business working with patients of any kind. Probably some low life that couldn't get a job of any kind elsewhere.

I get so mad when I think about these people that go into healthcare to "make money," that is not at all what sick patients need. I wish there was some way to weed out the careless people to try and produce a caring group of medical providers. I am i school right now for health professions and get so irritated when I realize how little people really care. It's just not right!

Hawkeye, your silkie pictures made me laugh. I don't think I've ever seen a silkie up close and personal. They sure have a comical look about them. Good luck at the show!

I'm going to start culling chicks over the next couple weeks. My birds are 6 weeks old today.

FREE Cockerels:

Easter Egger  (approx. 20, Mt. Healthy Araucanas to choose from) or Speckled Sussex  (approx. 15, McMurray to choose from). I have some really interesting color combinations on the EE'ers and I'm keeping the SSX with excessive white spotting for my Aloha project.

FREE Pullets:

4 Buff Orpingtons and approximately 5 Speckled Sussex, I'm keeping the larger birds.

These birds will eat out of our hands so are a pretty friendly group. They are all Marek's vaccinated and have been eating Atwood's medicated chick starter. They are kept on pine shavings over sand. We had an outbreak of mites so we sprayed each bird and dusted the Brooder generously with Sevin. Today is our second treatment.

PM me if you are interested.

When my grandmother finally had to go to the nursing home, it was a real eye opening experience. hugs.gif

I've decided I am going to pass away before I need a rest home! Not that I would wish that at all on my parents. I am hoping Mom will get well enough to come home some day.

I just sold one of my cochin roosters to some people I've sold many birds to in the past. He was a beautiful gold laced boy, one of my best bird's offspring. Got good money for him. They are going  to show him. I need to do more of that. They just dropped by.

I took a picture of the chicks that I took out of the incubator while ago. I have a bunch more pipped and a couple more hatched that weren't dry enough to remove yet. There were 37 chicks and 6 baby ducks in this bin.Got a few purebreds in the mix.newchicks.jpg

Danz, I'm so sorry your mom is having to go through that, I don't blame you I would be seeing red myself if I were you. I went through some stuff when my mom was dying of cancer that I will never forget. There are unfortunately too many uncaring people in the health care fields & it has gotten worse over the years, not better. Wow, you got a bunch of chicks there, I hope you can sell some of them. I'm trying to promote them on the Poultry Swap. If you can post a pic like that there maybe that would help.

KarenS, I wish I could get some of your chicks, but I already have 2 orders coming the end of April. I just don't have the coop space for more. I may be doing some culling myself in the end to make room for what I really want to keep. I love the Speckled Sussex myself & I plan to raise them when I get my breeder coop built. I ordered some more so I would have at least my trio again, but I ordered a couple extras to make sure they make it. My rooster has more white on him than I think they're really supposed to have, but I think he's pretty anyway. Wow, you have a bunch of roosters there, I bet you have some really pretty ones. You might put all of your chickens you want to get rid of on the Poultry Swap site, there are always people especially looking for hens, but someone might want one of your pretty roosters. If you could put some pics up that would help too.

I went out to collect eggs this morning & let everybody out & while I was out there I looked over by some big rocks I have besides the brick walkway to the garage & my EE hen Audrey was kind of laying with her wing spread out & her head resting on a rock. It really scared me for a minute because she is one of my favorite hens. I said something to her & then she got up. The only thing I could figure out was that the sun had peeked out for a minute & she was sunbathing. Silly hen!

OMG!!!!!  I have a fertile egg!!!  I think another might be fertile too-- but ONE of them is for SURE fertile!!!!  It's on day TWO and I can see blood and veins starting out from the center!!!!   HOLY CROW this is soooo exciting!!!!   SILKIE BABIES!!!!!!!   WOOOOHOOOOO!!!   celebrate.gif  wee.gif  ya.gif  jumpy.gif

ANyway, my broody is sitting on 3 eggs right now.  One was laid this morning, so for SURE it will be fertile too.  Yippee!!!  The other two were laid a couple days ago.  One is harder to see in, but there does look to be red in it -- but it doesn't seem to be as much as the other one that I'm SURE is fertile.  So I can't be sure about that one.  And it's just as well my broody is sitting on them, because while I'm gone, no one will be here to rotate my incubator.  I have no more eggs left in there, so it worked out fine since I'll be gone this weekend.  I'd ask my DH to rotate it, but I know he'll forget.  Besides-- isn't a broody the best way to incubate if you have one?  I can't wait!!  I can't wait!!
