Danz- Puppy made the trip okay; he was a bit car sick at first and only cried a little. I think he did great for having an almost 4 hour car ride! We named him Sarge :) He loves the kids and follows them everywhere already. When he gets tired, he goes and lays by DH's feet, wherever he may be at the time. He really seems to like our shepherd mix, too. She has never had puppies, but got very upset when he would whimper and cry last night. I think her being here helped him get through his first night away from his litter mates. I was working outside all day and didn't have a chance to get any pictures, but I will try to get some on here for you soon!

Wow!  What a day.  I would like to respond to everyone on here today, but I just don't have the energy.  Instead, I will tell you a bit about my day.

I've been wanting to upgrade my GQF to a model with auto turners.  I found one on craigslist.  It came with lots of accessories.It has the auto water system, 8 universal egg trays, several other egg trays, wicks, a stand, manual and several other odds and ends.

When we arrived at the farm to pick it up the owner was in a heck of a predicament.  He had a young boer goat that had accidently been bred too young.  She was trying to have her kids, but her pelvis was too small and the presentation wasn't right.  Mike had "pulled" calves, colts and kids before, so he tried to help the guy deliver the kid.  The poor goat's pelveis was so small it was all he could do to get in there.  He tried.  I tried.  The owner tried again.  Mike tried again.  We knew if we didn't get it out the momma would die, too. (He had called the vet, and the vet didn't like goats and wouldn't come out.  The vet made a statement I won't repeat because it was very unprofessional!) Mike was able to finally get the baby delivered, but it did not live.  She then had another kid that presented correctly and she was able to have it with minimal help.  It was a little doeling.  So mama and the little doeling were doing well when we left.

This guy was so greatful for our help in delivering the baby that he cut the price of the incubator by $100.  We didn't feel comfortable taking the money back for helping, so since we couldn't get him to take it we gave some back to his children.

THEN his wife gave us some homemade salsa and garlic jam.  I had never heard of garlic jam, but hey, I'm willing to try most anything!  He said on crackers it tastes amazingly like crab rangoon!

THEN I asked to see the chickens he was raising for his kids 4-H project.  OMG.  I would have lost my teeth if they were removable!  They were awesome partridge wyandotte bantams from the same line my original partridge wayandottes came from.  (Not the hatchery line we tried to replace some with.)  I recognized them right away and knew how hard they were to come by.  He told me the story of how he aquired them, then he gave me 18 HATCHING EGGS!

I had no intention of setting any more eggs until after my surgery, but in this case I am making an exception!  I hope I get a good hatch.  I want to give some to Checoukan so she can help the kids down there get a bigger variety of birds to their shows.

It's okay, I knew you meant me!  :)  Your chicks will definitely come running for you when they see you.  All I've done is spent a crazy amount of time with them-- holding them or giving them treats.  The silkies in particular, I hold and pet them every day.  I joke Zorro is my tv bird, he comes in the house the most.  It's a good thing for them to come running when they see you, and you can help condition that by petting and giving treats when you go out there.  As soon as you get them, start holding them and carrying them around.  Seymore is something else entirely.  She was an "only child" all summer long last year.  We held her and took her everywhere.  She's been on car rides with us in my lap while I'm driving.  She now follows me around like a puppy.  None of my others are bonded like that.

Hawkeye, I'm so glad you got your little hen back & she was OK, that's cute that she came running to you. Mine come running up to me any time I go out the front door, but it's because they think I'm going to feed them something.

 

 

Well we had to make a run to Wichita today to Sam's Club, our usual Sunday errands there & Petco & this time to Lowe's. DH finally decided that our garage door opener had to be replaced, that he was tired of trying to fix it. It was just worn out & I've been trying for at least a year to get him to buy a new one. I think my little hen finally did it in this time by flying around up there & getting caught in the wiring. I didn't want to tell him it was her for sure, but I think he probably guessed it. At any rate it has needed to be replaced for quite awhile anyway. Yay for the little hen! I guess something good came out of her escaping at any rate. DH is out there now starting to take down the old opener so he can put up the new one. We have an 8 ft by 16 ft metal garage door, so it's not something you want to have to open by hand. By the way, I peeked in on the little hen when I got home & she really seems to be getting better. Maybe a couple more days in the crate & I can put her in a more open pen out in the run so she can see the other chickens. She listens very intently during the day when the outside roosters crow & she has even tried to cluck at them in her strange chicken language. I think she is anxious to be out with other chickens.

Yeah, I took your advice and treat them with BOSS almost every day.  So now they come running when they see me close.  That's great that you got a new opener!  We had to get a new one -- gosh, it was either last year or the year before.  Time is getting away from me.  But our house got struck by lightening, and it fried our garage opener.  There were black burn marks on the ceiling of the garage.  (we lost a few other appliances in that storm, too)  But none of them really hindered our lives like the opener did!  We have one of those metal long doors too-- they are darned near impossible for me to open.  I guess I'm just a wimp.  But I couldn't do it.  I don't remember what was going on, but it took us 3 days to finally buy the new one and those were torture.  LOL!!

WOW-- that is all I can think to say about your day!  That new incubator is seriously very nice!  Congrats!!  But the poor little doe!  That's too bad she lost her first baby, but amazing you guys got the baby out AT ALL.  I nearly teared up at how grateful the family was and how much work you both did to help them save their goat.  That was so nice of them to give you the salsa....AND those eggs!!?!??!  WOW!!!!  That was soooooo nice of him!!  What an incredible gift to bring home!  I bet Checoukan will appreciate having a few of those birds, too.  That is so neat!  Wyandottes are so gorgeous.  :)

Wow Ivy, that is my kind of day! The big thing was you guys saved that nanny. I lost my favorite goat in child birth to the same circumstances but the vet had to cut the baby out in pieces. That was after multiple tries of pulling the kid.  It was just too much for my girl and she died later that night. I had others, but lost my interest in goats after that,and within a couple years sold them all. But what a bargain! No one ever gets a GQF like that for anywhere near that price. I am envious. Especially since I paid over $700 for my last one. It is all computer run though so I really don't do anything but add water now and then.

The problem with the auto water systems is that they spoil you so much you forget to check your top bucket and run below the outlet if you don't add water on a regular basis. I have mine on my hatcher since it requires the most humidity. DH thinks I should get one for each incubator but I am cheap.I am at the point with the hatcher and 3 other GQFs I feel like I could use a couple more. Sure wish the deal on the ones I bought from that gal who turned out to be a fraud had been ligit. Live and learn I guess.

Well I am at my wits end. Chopper has become a monster. Normally he goes in the den and lays down on the towels by his bin. But last night he decided he wanted to be near me. I got woke up numerous times by his yelling. I would put my hand down so he could see it and he would quiet down after a bit. But them it would start again. Needless to say I had to get down and scrub the floor this morning first thing. I guess regardless, I am going to have to put him in a kennel at night. He has gotten so spoiled he doesn't want to eat his duck food. Instead he wants cat food and other goodies.I had some left over spanish rice with burger in it we had last night. He ate gobs of it this morning. I was going to feed it to the chickens but he got most of it. At least he is growing fast! Maybe he'll fit into the ducky diapers sooner than I thought. I have never liked house pets but it seems I am over run with them.

Saphireblue, Sounds like the puppy is doing great. I knew he would be really happy with those boys. He will be great and your boys will always have a built in body guard. Regardless of opinions those dogs will protect people and animals at the same time. I see it all the time.

The other little boy went to his forever home yesterday. Now I've got just two girls left to be picked up. These last few are getting a lot more exposure to the chickens because I can let them out of the kennel for longer periods of time. It is easier to keep track of three of them than a whole litter.

Danz, I don't think I could put up with Chopper leaving piles of presents everywhere.  He'd be out the door or I'd figure out a diaper for him.    That is causing you a lot of work.

Here is where my coop is at as of this morning-- I haven't worked on it in a few days.  It's going to be nice today, so I plan on getting out there today!!  :)  I got the first coat of paint on it-- it's not pretty, but I wasn't aiming to make it perfect on the first coat.  I'm hoping the second coat will cover it better and will look great.  I'll need to put a cinder block or something under the "ramp/door" to rest on, so it's not at such an insane angle when I do put the birds in it.  But that's no biggie.  

Well, I've read everything I've missed this weekend but don't have a hope of remembering everything to comment on.  Anyway, here goes:

Tazcat & Danz, sorry to hear about your mother and mother-in-law health issues.  Hope things improve for them quickly.

Tweety - so sorry about your baby shower.  What an awful group of friends and how disappointing for you too after going to all that effort.  I hope she was able to enjoy the time with her Grandma anyway.

Hawkeye - sorry to hear about Seymore.  If she is out somewhere to get injured, does that mean she gave up on being broody?  What a cute story about Zelda running to jump in your arms.  I do think they have an understanding of us being there to save them and make their lives more comfortable.

Ivy - how great that you were able to help out a kidding doe and save her doeling.  Congrats on the GQF and the hatching eggs - what a great day.

I actually got a deal on Craigslist the other day I was happy with too.  I had been wanting a chipper/shredder to turn my leaves into better mulch, and had spent some time researching the different models last week, but hadn't quite got around to ordering one.  I looked at Craigslist Wednesday night and the top ad was for a Chipper/Shredder for $15.  After talking to the guy I told him "consider it sold - I'll be there in 15" and immediately jumped in the car and went to get it.  When I told DH, he was dubious, saying when he owned one years ago it was a cheap, plastic piece of junk and for $15, he was sure I'd got one similar.  But Saturday I pulled it out to show him and he was really impressed.  Although old, it is a heavy duty machine that probably cost several hundred $ when new.  We turned two large bags of leaves (that I picked up from someone's curb) into lovely mulch in a short amount of time - this thing works GREAT.  I was pretty happy with the day's work for sure.

Oh my, that is looking great!!!  I agree about the cinder block but that is an easy fix.
