I looked into that when I first noticed the curled toes. The chicks' diet had a riboflavin supplement plus fish meal & soy, so I don't think that was the issue.

Here is the next cockerel, Red2:

do you suppose its the close breeding in dels? i know the numbers are kind of low so maybe the deformity is from that..i know high incubator temps can do it too..

it seemss that some of the bigger breeds are to be the ones who get this..i did see another bird a while ago with it..they figured that during the time they were collecting hatching eggs, that particular hen was bullied by the others.. didnt get quite her share ..the yolk was poor compared to the other hens.

i

f somone knows what that is..would love to know..

I have just started raising Delawares this year.  I really like them so far!  Was wondering if any of you had suggestions for picking which males to keep when they are only 5 weeks old.  I need to make room and ended up with a large number of cockerels in this first batch of chicks.  The "extra" roos are going to auction this weekend.  As a newbie to Delawares are there things to look for that will help me choose a keeper?  At this time I have no interest in showing but want nice birds that are as close to breed standard as I can get.

Kim,

I like this guy A LOT better than the other.  He has a nice chest and tail angle and seems more balanced overall.  Very promising with good color.

Hey Stan you might check with HappyMtn on that one, as if my memory serves correctly(sometimes it does) she did this cross to begin the Blue-tailed Delaware project, if I'm wrong somebody HELP me out here. Ok LOL

There's a whole world of differences between propagators and breeders. My goal is to propagate breeders towards the Standard of Perfection.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, you can make a purse out of it, but it won't be silk. LOL

Maybe in about another 30-40 years I'll get this "being an expert" thing figured out by then. LOL

Man, I love seeing pictures of everyone's Dellies here and reading about the breeding projects going on. I've seen some of  the qualities that pop up a lot in hatchery stock (such as discoloration) and have wondered what all would go into re-creating the breed with the original birds Dellies came from. My hat is off to those hard workers who are committed to maintaining this standard!

I had a Delaware pullet not too long ago, but a dog got her and now I find myself with some Delaware envy for those who have them smile.png She was such a good-tempered little bird. I might not be able to get another one for a couple of years, due to all the chicks I'm raising right now, but I'm hoping that I can somehow get one much sooner than that. I just fell in love with that pullet, and the breed, as well.

Game warden of the crazy preserve. Inmates include: EE's, RIR, BSL, BO, SLW, Welsummer, Exchequer Leghorn, blue/black Wyandottes, BR's, Ameraucana's, and Icelandics <3 Plus an adopted brown turkey who is broody and must be part cobra, part goose :P

Red, sorry to hear you lost your girl. Hopefully you will be able to get some more Dels soon. I love their temperments and personality.

Please show pics of the others if you can.  Thanks, Bea

Since there are so many photos, I ended up putting the pics of my Braden Dels in a Flickr album. Please look at them and feel free to comment on them. I have to decide if any are worth breeding.
